Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir , by One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII, by Chester Nez, Judith Schiess Avila

The first and only memoir by one of the original Navajo code talkers of WWII-includes the actual Navajo Code and rare photos.
Although more than 400 Navajos served in the military during World War II as top-secret code talkers, even those fighting shoulder to shoulder with them were not told of their covert function. And, after the war, the Navajos were forbidden to speak of their service until 1968, when the code was finally declassified. Of the original twenty-nine Navajo code talkers, Chester Nez is the only one still alive. The original twenty-nine were the men who first devised the code, then proved it indispensable in combat.

In this memoir, the ninety-year-old Nez chronicles both his war years and his life growing up on the Checkerboard Area of the Navajo Reservation - the hard life that gave him the strength, both physical and mental, to become a Marine. His story puts a living face on the legendary men who developed what is still the only unbroken code in modern warfare.

From the Author
My friend, Navajo code talker Chester Nez, died on June 4, 2014, at the age of 93.  He was laid to rest in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. To honor him, New Mexico flags were flown at half mast. Police closed the 55 miles of freeway leading from his funeral in Albuquerque to the cemetery, so the funeral cortege could pass. Drivers, pulled to the side of the highway, stood by the road saluting, while 400+ motorcycle honor guards followed the casket. A fine farewell for a humble man who was not even issued a birth certificate back in 1921.

I first met Chester in January, 2007, and recorded his stories for three years. Writing Chester's memoir changed both of our lives for the better. I gained a second family and a deeper understanding of a culture different from my own, and Chester was thrilled that readers would learn how he and his fellow Navajos, the WWII code talkers, helped their country win WWII.

This is a story that remained a secret for too long.  I hope that you will enjoy reading our book as much as we enjoyed writing it!!

The book's dedication says a lot about Chester's desire to have all code talkers recognized:

This book is dedicated to the 420 World War II Navajo Marine code talkers - men who developed and implemented an unbreakable communications system that helped ensure the American defeat of the Japanese in the Pacific War.

When the war ended, other combatants were free to discuss their roles in the service and to receive recognition for their actions.  But the Marines instructed us, the code talkers, to keep our accomplishments secret. We kept our own counsel, hiding our deeds from family, friends and acquaintances.  Our code was finally declassified in 1968, twenty-three years after the war's end.

This book may be my story, but it is written for all of these men.

May they and their loved ones walk in beauty.

The personal struggle and triumph of Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken + Code Breaking intrigue of The Imitation Game with Navavjos
By Davidmesaaaz
This is one of the best books that I have read in quite a while. It's a first person account of the Navajo Code talkers of WWII. Before they invented the code out of the Navajo language the Japanese broke every code the US. This allowed the Japanese to continually defeat the US in the Pacific. Once the Chester Nez and the code talkers created the code the fortunes of the US Pacific fleet changed. He was so essential to the war effort he did 3 consecutive tours of duty in the South Pacific. The Armed Forces couldn't communicate and couldn't move without the Code Talkers. Because it's a first person account makes you feel that you're right in the middle of the Battle of Guadalcanal and other Island hoping battles.

Chester Nez talked about Navajo culture and traditions but weaved it into the story of his life. He grew up tending sheep when he was young but if the Coyotes were to kill a sheep they couldn't eat it because Coyotes were the embodiment of evil. He describes the funeral arrangements when his mother died. How he went to boarding school and he was punished for speaking Navajo but less than 10 years later then government needed them to become a Navajo Code talker for the War effort.

Fascinating Memoir
By Julie D. Lillis
This is definitely a must-read for anyone interested in this topic or certainly the history of the war. The code talkers were neglected for so many years - and one could certainly digress as to why, but that is fodder for another day. This memoir is a good start on the road to rectifying that wrong.

The memoir could have concentrated just on the war years, but that would have been a mistake. Any good historian knows, as the late R.G.L. Waite used to say, that in order to study World War II you must look back as far as possible. And in order to look back at the late Mr. Nez's experience in the war, it is imperative that he fully discuss his life with the reader- which he wisely did in this volume. We are introduced to his life before the war - beginning as a young child, including when he was forced to attend boarding school for many years, away from his family, where English was rammed down his throat and his native language was forbidden. If you are unfamiliar with the legalized repression of the Navajo culture in American history, this is yet another reason why you absolutely must read this book.

It is perfectly understandable why it was co-written by a professional writer, who spent countless hours interviewing him in depth. Our code talker never pretended to be a professional writer, nor should he have spent years writing a memoir at his advanced age. I am sure he had better things to do. His co-writer was smart in that she allowed him to retain his voice almost always throughout the book. You note that I said "almost always." There are times in the book - even sentences and paragraphs - where it is clear that the writing is in an entirely different voice, and as an experienced reader that may jangle your nerves. Their editors should have caught that and fixed it.

However, any memoir that is cowritten with a professional writer usually has this as an Achilles heel, and one must suppress one's perfectionism as a reader because the story itself is so compelling. Certainly the story within Code Talkers is extraordinarily compelling and the writing, quite good. I read it very quickly within a couple of days - and you probably will as well. I recommend it highly.

I cannot stop reading this book.
By Gloria Rosenthal
Sorry! No time to write a review. I must get back to my Kindle where this book is keeping me totally engrossed. I am at a critical time when the Marines have landed in the Pacific and the Code Talkers....wait! I am going to stop talking now as I really can't wait to know what happens next. I might come back here later, much later when I have to charge my Kindle! But not a moment before I am forced to stop reading.

Since his wife's death, world-famous author Ford Newcombe has lived a solitary life, void of creativity -- or love. Then Jackie Maxwell tears down the walls of his isolated world with her sassy wit and fierce intelligence. Ford's heart is touched by his vivacious assistant -- and his imagination sparked by her knowledge of a strange story that drives them to a small North Carolina town brimming with secrets. There, they will trace the mystery of a woman said to have loved the devil himself...and discover not only the truth about a crime from the past -- but a passion that holds the promise of a new life together.
Jude Deveraux, whose "enchanting and extraordinary" (Chicago Daily Herald) novels have enthralled millions, creates two of her most memorable characters in this powerful bestseller.

From Publishers Weekly
Forget garden-variety ghosts and poltergeists-the devil himself makes an appearance in bestseller Deveraux's latest romantic suspense novel. When famed mystery writer Ford Newcombe loses his beloved wife, Pat, he can't bear the thought of writing without her. Six years later, Ford is moving from one small town to another in an attempt to cure his writer's block when he hears the story of a woman who was murdered because she loved the devil. Fascinated by the tale, he decides that he must investigate it and approaches Jackie, the storyteller, to offer her the job of assisting him. Needing a change of pace, Jackie agrees to accompany him to Cole Creek, N.C., and strange things begin to happen when they arrive-Jackie instinctively knows her way around the town, she begins to have frightening premonitions that come true and the townspeople insist that the devil tale is just a rumor. Not one to give up, Ford continues to investigate and discovers an article about a 20-year-old murder. As he uncovers more gruesome details, he begins to suspect that Jackie may have somehow been involved in or witnessed the murder. Meanwhile, Jackie meets a man who seems too good to be true, who is also interested in the devil story. As Ford and Jackie work their way closer to the truth, it becomes clear that the story about the devil may be horrifically true. Deveraux's writing is sloppy ("I tried to pep Jackie up because she was looking as forlorn as an abandoned puppy"), but her plotting is effective, and she does a superb job of building up to her chilling conclusion.

From Booklist
Ford Newcombe grew up amongst his 11 uncles and their families, never really fitting in with his ne'er-do-well relatives. He met his wife, Pat, in college and she became his muse, helping him become a famous author. But after 21 years of marriage Pat dies, and Ford is at a loss, looking everywhere for the inspiration to begin writing again. He meets Jackie Maxwell, a young woman with a gift for storytelling, and she tells a doozy about a modern-day woman who is stoned because she was seen consorting with the devil. Ford wants to hire Jackie, but she is about to get married. Life has other plans, however, and Jackie ends up traveling with Ford to Cole Creek, North Carolina, the site of the stoning. Jackie recognizes the town, and she and Ford soon realize that she must have been there before, and perhaps witnessed the event. As in her last book, Forever [BKL O 15 02], Deveraux combines romance and the occult in a new and entertaining manner. Patty Engelmann

Stick With What You Know
By A Customer
Why is it that all the good writers i.e. Jude Deveraux, Judith McNaught, Julie Garwood, and Elizabeth Lowell think that they need to "branch out" and take their writing in different directions. The stories about relationships and characters are what sold their books in the first place and it is unfortunate that these women want to concentrate more on the overall plot and sub-characters now. I enjoy a story about 2 main characters and think that that is were these authors are strongest. In this book there where way too many wacky and unbelievable characters who took away from the very under-developed main characters. If you are a long time Jude Deveraux fan I think you will be dissappointed. This is nothing like the magic of books like Sweet Liar or AKISA. Deveraux's strength is in writing a good sit down romance. A romance where you read the book in 3 hours because you just can't put it down. I struggled through this one for three days and had a hard time finishing it. My vote - bring back the fun and excitement of the Taggarts and Montgomerys.

Disappointing for Deveraux
By Wanda Scarpinato
Frankly, this one doesn't live up to standards I have for Deveraux novels. It is interesting but could be BETTER. It is good but could be GREAT. I feel that Ms. Deveraux needed Ford's dead wife Pat to edit this work... and point out the problems she created but didn't solve.
A chapter from Ford's viewpoint; rehash the same happenings from Jackie's viewpoint and create a few new happenings; rehash those new happenings from Ford's viewpoint... well, you get the idea.
We've got a hero(?) who is almost twice his counterpart's age (she's 26 and he's at least 49 (graduated at 22, married for 21 years, wife dead for 6 years = 49+). To work as his assistant and track down a tale of the devil, she up and moves to another state with him to live in a rundown house and doesn't even discuss salary until after they get there (get real Ms. Deveraux). Once there, Ms. Deveraux doesn't get into the "mystery" until almost the last chapters of the book. Then she solves it without telling us any of the details, other than the fact Jackie has a grandmother and that the devil tempts Ford.
Oh, at the end of the book Ford snickers that Jackie now knows why he saves his energy (he supposedly wore out Jackie sexually) - ...

This is NOT a romance novel, but I loved it anyway
By Lesili
I have been reading Jude Deveraux for years, and I just love her writing style and her compelling characters. Both were present in this book.
The plot kept me on the edge of my seat, I love the dark aspects and the mystery. I read it in one sitting, couldn't put it down all day.
However, if you are a romance fan, the romance in this book will probably not be satisfying. There are no love scenes, and not a whole lot of sexual tension. Their romance almost seems like an afterthought to the whole book. But, I wasn't reading it for the romance. I was reading it for the ride, for the mystery and for the characters.
I can't wait for her next one!

Worthless: The Young Person's Indispensable Guide to Choosing the Right Major, by Aaron Clarey

Worthless is the single most important book young men and women can read before they attend college. While teachers, guidance counselors and even parents are afraid to tell you the truth in an effort to spare your feelings, Worthless delivers a blunt and real-world assessment about the economic realities and consequences of choosing various degrees with a necessary and tough fatherly love. Don't lie to yourself. And certainly don't waste four years of your youth and thousands of dollars in tuition on a worthless degree. Buy this audiobook and understand why it is important you choose the right major. The book itself could be the wisest investment you ever make.

Exaggerated but useful
By Book dallier
Here is what this book will tell you, in a nutshell:

--You should major in a STEM field, preferably in some type of engineering other than environmental. Clarey discusses and ranks the various engineering fields, but basically, any type of engineering except for environmental is OK. Also OK: degrees leading to jobs in the medical profession (although Biology and especially Kinesiology are discouraged); accounting, statistics, econometrics, and actuarial degrees (though Economics and Finance are discouraged); and computer-oriented degrees. Clarey says little about majors in theoretical sciences such as "pure" math or physics, but it is safe to assume he would discourage them for being not practical enough.

--Also OK is any training that will produce a precise and valued skill. Trade school and military routes are encouraged. The author is vehement that "the lowly plumber has more in common with the bio-engineer than does a doctorate in philosophy because the plumber, like the bio-engineer, produces something of value." Trade school is considered "a superior option to the humanities or liberal arts" because it leads to the acquisition of a skill that is in demand.

--The economics of supply and demand should exclusively dictate what one chooses to study. This is a major point of the book. The author gives the model of a medieval European village in which everyone is expected to pull his weight by providing a genuinely useful service to the community. In such a village, there is no room for "the professional activist, the social worker, the starving artist, the trophy wife, the socialite or the welfare bum." Everyone must contribute something that is in demand by the other villagers. By contrast, in modern American society, people increasingly choose educational paths that bear no resemblance to the products and services they actually want and need--everyone demands cars, gas, and gadgets, but fewer and fewer people are willing to study the fields needed to produce them. Instead of electrical and petroleum engineering, people major in "soft" subjects that do not enable them to create sought-after commodities. In the author's pithy words, "I have yet to see a student ask Santa for 'a lecture about women's studies.'"

--Education, particularly higher education, is something of a conspiracy. Its de facto role is to supply teaching and administrative jobs to the thousands of people with worthless degrees. The author points out that in America, the government spends much more on education than on Big Oil or the military, and argues that many self-serving people are after a piece of that money. Mostly, he thinks schoolteachers are disingenuous. He also asserts that "soft" degree programs are pushed because they turn a higher profit for universities than sciences programs. General education and core requirements--"prerequisites," as he calls them--are viewed as a massive waste of time and tuition money, because students can become well-rounded just from having friends and interests. In his view, liberal arts departments pass on useless knowledge at a high cost to students; their goal is to supply salaries to professors with degrees from the same departments. He calls this "The Circle of Why Bother."

--You should not major in Architecture, Political Science, Communications/Journalism, Marketing, Business, HR, or anything in the liberal arts or humanities for economic reasons, moral reasons, and because of the author's distaste for them. This distaste gets plenty of attention in the book. Just a sampling: "When you major in Finance, you must understand that you are majoring in something barely more moral or ethical than being a lawyer." "[Politicians] don't really care about the people, they just couldn't find real jobs." "[Minority-studies degrees] are particularly dirty and low degrees in that not only are they worthless, but they target minority groups as their victims. [...] There is no employable skill in merely having a trait you were born with." And finally, "Declaring a worthless major is simply shouting out to the world, 'I'm a parasite and have no intentions of working for a living. I want to do what I want to do and I want the rest of you to pay for it. I ultimately want to produce nothing society wants [...] I also want society to create some make-work job for me so my ego isn't bruised and I can make believe I'm a real-word-live [sic] adult too. And if you dare point out what I'm doing in the real world is nothing more than parasiting off of others, I'll cowardly hide myself behind some altruistic crusade and excuse of you of being a racist, a misogynist, or a hater of children."

Among his arguments are that everyone who achieved success in the arts or business did so without studying them formally, and that any subject that can be learned by reading books should be studied in a library for free. He actually includes this chart:

Degree: / Replacement: / Savings:
Foreign Languages / Language Software / $29,721
Philosophy / Read Socrates / $29,980
Women's Studies / Watch Daytime TV / $30,000
Journalism / Start a blog / $30,000
Radio/Broadcasting / Apply / $30,000
Political Science / Listen to talk radio / $30,000
Theater / Audition for a play / $30,000
Literature / Go to the library / $30,000
English / Speak English / $30,000

--Your life will be hell if you don't take the author's advice. Choosing a soft major will lead to poverty, health problems, and even divorce. Four years of studying something "rigorous" is a small price to pay to avoid a lifetime of misery.

The author makes some good points in this book. In particular, his economic argument is compelling. Supply and demand for careers is indeed an important consideration when it comes to choosing what to study, and it is true that far too few people are telling students this. Also, the author spends a bit of time urging students to make friends with math and arguing that anyone can excel at math if they put in the time and effort. This is excellent advice that is much-needed in our country. For these aspects alone, I consider this book a worthwhile read.

However, it was a mistake for Clarey to let his argument veer into issues of morality and taste. His frequent suggestions that certain fields/career choices are immoral and disgusting is quite off-putting. The book is full of scorn for "washed-out," "ponytailed," "unemployed" professors, for academic jargon, and for the perceived laziness and dishonesty of all who major in "worthless" fields. Not only that, but there is a lot in this book that is plainly misguided, and reveals how little Clarey knows about the fields he deplores. He frequently argues that high-level study of writing and English are useless because "if you are 18 years old and got accepted into an accredited college, then it's a pretty safe bet you're fluent enough in English." Unfortunately, Clarey's own not-great writing betrays that there is in fact a need for college English courses. His argument that having interests is a substitute for taking general education courses is especially unconvincing.

And although the strong point of this book is Clarey's sound application of basic economics, he does make some brash proclamations that do not seem grounded in rigor or realism. Among his exaggerations are that a "soft" degree leads not only to a potentially lower income, but to physical and emotional perdition: "Talk to anybody with stress related health problems or who is going through divorce and ask them if they'd trade it in for having to major in a tough subject for four years. I guarantee every one of them would opt to get their PhD in Computer Engineering." Economists tend to be good about not making such leaps of oversimplification, but Clarey apparently is not.

A final, but fundamental objection to Clarey's argument is that there is more to life and happiness than the production of wealth. Perhaps it is true that many people would be better off economically if they followed Clarey's advice. But if everyone did, ours would be a culture without historians, philosophers, theologians, artists, musicians, and writers. No one would take the personal economic risks necessary to follow the humanistic impulse that gives pride and meaning to our collective existence. Clarey does not acknowledge that the medieval village might in fact have been a lot worse for not having social workers or puppeteers. (And yes, someone needs to be a lawyer or a politician, too!) By suggesting that no one needs to study these things in order to do them, Clarey reveals how little he knows about the truly rigorous and worthwhile study that upholds many of these disciplines. It is in fact valuable for a musician to study music, and it is in fact valuable for an artist to study art. Nor is the serious study of art or music a joke. (The same can be said about philosophy, anthropology, sociology, and literature.)

While Clarey overlooks and overshoots a lot in this book, it is nonetheless a useful one. As far as pure employability goes, Clarey is mostly right about the degrees he praises and condemns. If only his broader argument were a little more modest and circumscribed, and a little better balanced by knowledge of other perspectives, this might be a truly good book.

A Must for College-bound Students
By Mark Andre Alexander
Despite the fact that I have one major disagreement with a small part of this book, Aaron Clarey's work is a little masterpiece of straight talk.

He brilliantly dissects those college degrees that have worth and those that are worthless, based on the simple yet staggering truth of Supply and Demand. Further, he helps the college-bound student recognize how spineless parents, teachers, guidance counselors and the like have failed in giving students the truth about a valuable education and going into debt for a worthless one.

If you plan on going to college to party, follow your bliss, and thinking any degree is a good degree, you are setting yourself up for failure and a low-income job.

Clarey also argues strongly that you have a moral responsibility to obtain a worthwhile degree. His final "Parting Advice" chapter emphasizes both actually working while schooling and getting a B.S. rather than a B.A. He also demonstrates the value of some 2-year degrees.

The key is building skills that are in demand. And thus he focuses on STEM: Science, Techonology, Engineering and Math.

My one disagreement is small but important. He sees a B.A. in English as worthless. Well, he's right if the degree means learning merely to read literature and arguing critical theory. But if you get the right professor (as I did, a real dinosaur who understood the technology of writing) you can learn how to write as a valuable skill. My advantage is that I started out as a math/science guy, studying computer programming, but once I sold an article to a computer magazine, I was hooked on making a living as a freelance writer. I ended up making a living in Silicon Valley earning up to $3000 for a half-day's work on a corporate video script. I ended up in a corporate job that pays six figures with only a B.A. but I had plenty of actual work "experience" that made up the deficit. (I later earned an M.A. in Organization and Management Development, which could have been a worthless degree, except my company paid for it!)

I also ended up loving Shakespeare, the ancient Greeks, and much more of a liberal education. But without that main orientation in math and science, I would have ended up a teacher with a low salary.

Clarey's book brings clarity
By Em
Do yourself or your kids a favor and read this book. Mr. Clarey makes clear in a playful, sarcastic, yet lucid way that you cannot expect to waltz into a paper-making factory (AKA universities), choose any major, and except to be magically successful after completing the requirements for the degree. This book influenced the trajectory of my life so far, with great results (I chose a great degree that is also useful in the world). His advice concerning graduate school is relevant, as well.

This is an excellent book to practice food engineering excercises. Very appropriate theoric review at the beginning of every chapter. However, I would suggest the author to include the answers to all the problems that are at the final of each chapter, or at least a web page to double check the answers to these exercises. Besides that, I would not be hesitated to buy it again. I like the fact is not a heavy or big book, more like a light pocket presentation.

Roanoke: The Lost Colony--An Unsolved Mystery from History, by Heidi E. Y. Stemple, Jane Yolen

In 1587 John White was chosen by Sir Walter Raleigh to lead a new colony at Roanoke off the Atlantic coast. After bringing many men, women, and children to the new land, White went back to England to gather supplies for the long winter. But when he finally returned to the fort almost three years later, he found that all of the colonists had vanished. The only signs of life left were the letters CRO carved into a tree and the word CROATOAN carved into one of the fort's posts. Some people think that the Spanish army captured the colonists; some people think that the local native people murdered them; others think that the colonists went off to live with the native people and start a new life. Still others think that the colonists tried to sail home to England and were lost at sea. No one knows for sure.
Become a detective as you read this true story, study the clues, and try to figure out the fate of the lost colony of Roanoke. The Unsolved Mystery from History series is written by acclaimed author Jane Yolen and former private investigator Heidi Elisabet Yolen Stemple. Read carefully and check your clues. You might be the first to solve a puzzle that has baffled people for years.

From Booklist
Gr. 2-5. As in The Mary Celeste (1999) and The Wolf Girls (2001), this picture book for older children is framed by a fictional story about a detective's daughter who investigates a famous historical mystery. Here she tells readers about the founding of the Roanoke colony in 1587. It seems the colony's leader, who departed to obtain supplies, returned to find the colonists gone. The girl sets forth several theories and questions about what may have happened to the "lost colony," letting readers examine the facts and draw their own conclusions. There's a lot going on here: a framework story, the historical account, the ending hypotheses, and the addition of "notebook pages" with background information; children may need to read the book more than once to take it all in. The large, picture-book format offers plenty of scope for Roth's appealing narrative illustrations in watercolor and pencil. An attractive, intriguing introduction to the lost colony. Carolyn Phelan

A great true life mystery
By The Park School
This is a wonderful book for children ages 7 - 12. The historical information is presented in an organized way that captivates one's imagination. The illustrations keep a child's interest and the notebook pages help the reader try to solve the mystery.

Roanoke The Lost Colony An Unsolved Mystery From History
By The Park School
This book was amazing! Full of interesting clues about the never-answered questions, "What really happened? Who is to blame for George Howe's death? And where is the colony now?" Jane Yolen brilliantly tells the story about how George Howe died, shot with arrows while fishing for crabs, and how the colony Roanoke disappeared twice without a trace.
A brilliant tale of mystery. (...)

Pretty good account of the mystery of the Roanoke colony. Provides much more information than any textbooks I've seen. There are better books out there though, I'd keep searching if you're just starting to browse.
