Army of Maria Theresa

The Army of Maria Theresa is a book that is well written and well worth reading. Anyone interested in European warfare in the 18th century will enjoy this work. Christopher Duffy clearly explains the evolution of the Army under Maria Theresa to including an expose on all of the ethnic components. He explains order of battle, uniforms, grooming standards, equipment and weapons and patterns of life of the Soldiers. He also does a fine job describing the commanders and campaigns they fought under Maria Theresa. In reading about the campaigns one discovers that in her many battles against Frederick the Great her armies gave as good as they got and sent Frederick scurrying off the battlefield on more than one occasion. A great book, glad I read it.

The Army of Maria Theresa

Mr. Duffy created this fine work some years ago (1977) as a companion piece to his much lauded "The Army of Frederick The Great". Since publication, both books have become the gold standard in English on the Austrian and Prussian Armies of the Seven Years War. I recommend both of these books, in fact anything written by Mr. Duffy, with the highest possible endorsement. His scholarship is clean, even and well researched. His enthusiasum for the subject matter only increases the readers level of interest. His style of writing is very approachable and never leaves one wondering what was meant.

Cover to cover, "The Army of Maria Theresa" is full of very useful information for the serious scholar, the casual reader, the wargamer and the modeler. It is replete with wonderful anecdotes concerning the Empress Queen, her political and military leaders and very neatly covers virtually every aspect of the Austrian Army, its soldiers and civilians. Good biographies of the major players are included as is an excellent coverage of the major campaigns of this army. There are some thorough descriptions of ordanance, weapons, uniforms and equipment, good discussions of wheeled vehicles and their horsepower and an excellent discussion of the soldiers life from his induction to his end, either on the battlefield or in peacetime. Medical services and religious needs are presented in some detail as well. A snapshot of regimental histories was greatly appreciated and the bibliography is also very useful providing almost five pages of source material and additional research opportunities.

A perusal of this work will provide even the casual reader an excellent overview of the Army that not only nearly stopped Frederick The Great, but also went on to provide Napoleon Bonaparte with his most contentious enemy.

His newer, two volume study of the Theresian Austrian Military, "Instrument of War" and "By Force of Arms" seem to be a greatly expanded version of this book, but there are still nuggets to be gleaned from this book that do not show up in the newer works.

I am hoping that perhaps a two volume reappraisal of "The Army of Frederick The Great" may be just around the corner. I have both the original edition and the updated version of that work. Duffy is a master and both books are very useful.

"The Army of Maria Theresa" belongs on the bookshelf of every military scholar either academic or casual.

I love this pattern!! A wonderful gift item for newborns. Although very easy for Beginners, it is not one that can be done quickly so plan ahead. It's like making two, and the second part takes longer. I began with the shell in Pink and then again over the shell with white ruffles into each stitch. The ruffles alone took two skeins of white; the shell and ruffles in Simply Soft. The hat was done in all white Simply Soft, but am thinking of doing another hat in white with a lower row (or two) in pink. The Simply Soft yarn is stretchy, which may enable extended wear - depending on size and weight of infant. I'm looking forward to seeing this one on my newest granddaughter who is expected the end of September! I have a photo (not a video) that I'd love to share as it turned out lovely!

I believe this book will help the many. Sometimes, in the midst of love, we lose our strength. This book reinforces the importance of standing up for one's own self; especially, when a spouse may be running over you with continuous disrespect. Ultimately, when we stand up for our self and what's right...we actually prove to be standing up for our marriage as a whole.

This was a great resource for me over a year ago. Though my marriage wasn't saved through this, it helped me to stop chasing after a marriage that I was alone in, and a partner who was constantly threatening to get out. It begin to help me change the cycle of that relationship. I highly recommend you read this if you are constantly the one fighting for your marriage; it helped me gain some great insights. I don't recommend that you read this with the intent of getting out of your marriage, but rather trying to save it. As with everything (in my opinion), first and foremost bring your situation and the information found within this book before the Lord, stay in the Word, and trust Him while he leads you through whatever your marriage might be facing.

About the Author
Steve joined Brighton from the University of Liverpool where he was part of the management group of Impacts 08, the research programme designed to assess the social, cultural and economic impacts of European Capital of Culture. Perhaps the most bizarre experience of his academic career was presenting the proposal for Impacts 08 to a panel chaired by Loyd Grossman.

Steve previously worked at Northumbria University where he was Head of Research for the Centre for Cultural Policy and Management and where he conducted a large-scale research project into the impact of cultural investment on Newcastle Gateshead Quayside. Many years previously Steve undertook his PhD in the Behavioural Sciences Department at the University of Huddersfield in which he was concerned with the relationship between consumption and identity amongst young people.

Painter Hughie Lee-Smith (1915-1999) sought to transform his experiences growing up as an African American during the Great Depression into meditations on the human condition. In each of Lee-Smith's enigmatic compositions, barren landscapes, lone figures, and contrasting juxtapositions elicit many questions that lead the viewer to self-reflection. 'I cannot begin to project the meaning of my work in specific terms,' Lee-Smith said, 'for these paintings, at their best, are multi-faceted visual complexes whose many aspects are pregnant with as many disparate meanings as there are viewers.'

Active in the art scenes of Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago, Lee-Smith found inspiration in the New Negro Movement-Harlem Renaissance and nurtured his artistic talents early by participating in the Works Progress Administration/Federal Art Project. While he objected to strict definitions of 'black art,' his personal struggles with race identity, social justice, and alienation became recurring themes in his paintings throughout his career. At times a realist and at times a romantic, Hughie Lee-Smith captured the uncertainty of a generation caught between memories of the past and the promises of the future.

About the Author
Leslie King-Hammond received her BFA from Queens College (CUNY) and an MA and PhD from the Johns Hopkins University in Art History. She began teaching art history courses at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 1973, became Graduate Dean Emeritus, and was appointed Founding Director of the Center for Race and Culture at MICA in 2008. Currently she is the Chair of the Board of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture in Baltimore. King-Hammond also sits on the boards of the Alliance of Artists Communities, The Creative Alliance at Patterson in Baltimore, and the Industrial Advisory Council for the NAACP/ACT-SO program. She has written numerous publications on African American artists, including an essay for the Jacob Lawrence catalogue raisonn�.

about time

What a treasure.This is a wonderful book about one of the world's great neglected artists.Fifty seven full page full color reproductions plus numerous b&w photos and a thoughtful insightful biography.These beautiful and mysterious urbanscapes are so haunting and so poetic that they call to mind the work of De Chirico.There are no ancient ruins here though,there are midwestern tenements,and no Italian piazzas,there are inner city roof tops.Lee-Smith's paintings seem to express the loneliness,alienation,dreams and aspirations of 20th century African Americans.
They are surreal,they portray the reality within reality,the soul of people and places.Wounded but unconquered Lee-Smith was no bigot.Europeans, strangely conspicuous in this segregated world,sometimes haunt these metaphysical interiors perhaps foreshadowing a more enlightened time.

I try to make it a thing to discover a new artist or work everytime I visit a major art museum for the first time.

Walking thru the fantastic African American wing @ the DIA,I came upon four paintings which stopped me in my tracks.They all featured a lone figure in the midst of a vast,decaying urban landscape.These subjects all seemed to be in a state of contemplation,as if surveying their current dilemmas which surrounded them.

It occured to me that this guy wasn't painting everyday urban scenes,but depicting images which were borderline surreal,almost,and I say ALMOST,in the same vein as De Chirico.These are pictoral equivalents to different states of mind and feeling.Hughie's images connect with us since we've all been in the place his subjects find themselves in.Lonely,but with a sense of hope.Quiet reflection in an otherwise loud and fast paced world.Looking far and wide across great spaces to find our place.

Onto the book itself,the text is well written and provides a thorough biography of the artist.It puts his various works into context and provides beautiful reproductions.

This seems to be the only book on the artist,which is such a shame,however we are lucky that the only one out there hits all the right notes.

Bloody Bells

Ask not for whom the bloody bells toll, they toll for thee, and their ringing will bring a chaotic nightmare of evil into the world.
I really enjoyed this segment of Mike Mignola's character Lord Baltimore and his experience with The Curse Bells. The main premise in the story seems to be that people are inherently evil, and it is only in making conscious choices to help others that they become human.
Mike Mignola's version of vampires in this story is that people once worshipped them as gods, but after people acquired more knowledge and evolved from their inherent base nature, vampires lost their hold over humans until the horror of modern warfare made them relevant again.
In this volume, Lord Baltimore has had everything but his thirst for revenge taken away from him by one of these ancient creatures, and as he follows his path of personal retribution, Lord Baltimore runs straight into an even greater evil that is manifesting itself in a war torn Europe; the way this malevolent issue is presented at the end of World War I resonates with historic significance... And the irony of Lord Baltimore's situation is that he too is being hunted by a religious fanatic determined to eradicate malevolence from the remnants of the plague savaged landscape, so the decisions Lord Baltimore makes are sure to have significant consequences in the next volume of Mike Mignola's Lord Baltimore.
The blood drenched art work is my favorite part of the book: humanities life vitae flows in crimson waterfalls from carillon bells to fall earthward and splash upward in violent counterforce as it strikes pools of plasma puddles that roll over the dead and run down stony steps to infuse a variety of horrific characters with a liquid, vibrant red: vampires as huge bats; rotting vampire nuns torturing themselves with cross flagellation and Eucharist immolation; soldier warlocks intent on taking on the world; bloody female dwarf homunculus so evil they cannot be killed. All this and much more are drawn to create a tortured landscape where even the most innocent appearing youth is stained with evil.
This is a dark and foreboding tale told for those who have strong constitutions and the courage to deal with the possibility that evil is only waiting for the right spark to bring it to life.

Mike Mignola can do no wrong.

I might be overstating in the title but I have never been truly disappointed in one of his stories. The Curse Bells delivers more of the creepy atmosphere and scary thrills that Mignola is known for in Hellboy. Baltimore is a bit of a reluctant and tragic hero but a hero none the less.

Baltimore is not set in the Hellboy universe but it's not far removed. The over story of Baltimore pursuing his revenge on a Vampire and dealing with various other supernatural horrors along the way is excellent on it's face. The sub nature of the story with him dealing with the fact that he is now a champion against supernatural evil, (sounds silly when you say it and probably feels worse when you know it's true) is compelling and gives the character depth. This second comic chapter is stronger and a better read than the first.

The best thing Dark Horse released in 2011

`Baltimore: The Curse Bells' (Volume 2) compiles issues 1 - 5 (August - December 2011) of the eponymous comic books.`The Curse Bells' series was, quite simply, the best thing Dark Horse released in 2011. And the entire `Baltimore' series is, in my opinion, easily the best entry in the current 'Mignola comic book franchise'.

Why is "Baltimore' so good ?

The major appeal of `Baltimore' is the outstanding artwork by New Zealander Ben Stenbeck. Even more so than Duncan Fegredo (`Hellboy: The Wild Hunt'), Stenbeck takes the `Durer Woodcut' graphic style of Mignola, and gives it his own, distinct, character. The result is artwork that is markedly superior to the cartoony, hasty style of illustration that dooms so many of the `B.P.R.D.' comics.

When Stenbeck's art combines with the able coloring ability of Dave Stewart, the result is a comic with an Old Worlde visual flavor, perfectly rendered in moody grays, sepias, browns, and forest greens.

Which makes the red blood and gore of `Curse Bells' stand out all the better.....

The second thing going for `Baltimore' is Christopher Golden, and his handling of the writing duties. While the first `Baltimore' series, `The Plague Ships' (2010) started off on a promising note, but tended to turn into a conventional hero Vs monster tale in the final issues, in `Bells', Golden keeps the plot churning along with surprises and gruesome revelations through until the last page. After the incoherent, rambling character of Mignola's `The Wild Hunt' Hellboy series, the tighter plotting skills of Golden really make a difference for the `Baltimore' franchise.

The other reviewers give a good synopsis of the plot of `Bells', so I won't belabor the storyline except to state that it takes place after the events of `Plague Ships', but it isn't necessary to have read that series to understand what takes place in `Bells'.

The story unfolds in an alternate Europe, in the aftermath of WWI. It's 1916, and in the dark and creepy woods outside Lucerne, Switzerland, Lord Baltimore is asking wary peasants for the location of his archenemy, the vampire Haigus. When a couple of kids direct him to a nearby village, the vampire hunting action kicks off and doesn't let up.

Any fan of horror fiction, and comics, will want to get a copy of `The Curse Bells'.

"Turning 50 can be one of the most powerful and positive sexual passages in a man's life," writes Barbara Keesling, a sexuality and psychotherapy educator. However, "the focus has to be on lovemaking, not erections--on partnership, not performance." After 50, men's sexual response is affected by the "Big 5": stimulation, circulation, lubrication, stress, and sleep. Keesling teaches women (and men) how to understand how the "Big 5" affect sex, and specifically what to do about each of them. For example, anything that affects blood flow affects erections: temperature, time after eating, position, friction, gravity, and illness, to name just a few.

Keesling presents a series of exercises designed to keep your man "sexually fit, sexually focused, and sexually fabulous for decades." Here's another title in the gush of "boomer's and older" sex books within the last few years. Keesling, a sex therapist for ten years and the author of several other sex manuals, focuses not on illnesses associated with aging that affect sex but on coping with the normal and gradual decline in the speed and intensity of male sexual response. Se prescribes two approaches for women partners: firstly, find the advantages in your man's sexual changes and use them to improve your sex life together; secondly, work with your main in a series of exercises to enhance circulation to his genital area and to increase his sexual sensitivity. Her warm and colloquial approach makes a sense for enhancing intimacy as well as sexual response. A short appendix reviews methods for treating true, organic impotence. Although illustrations would have been useful, this is a fine book and is recommended to complement more medical works like Williamson's Great Sex After 40.

not quite what I was expecting

There is a little bit about the physical changes in an older man's body that was good information to learn. But most of the book is filled with suggestions that don't seem to be specific to older men specifically, but good lovemaking in general. I was hoping for more specific info. And I think this should be for a man over 60 not 50.

Back to basics...

Having reached that half-century milestone and having done quite a bit of reading on how menopause was affecting my body, I wanted to better understand what that transition meant for men. I'd heard of "male menopause," but I had no idea what that really was or how it might impact on my man and our life together. I looked at numerous books and the reviews led me to select this one. It was exactly what I was looking for.

As a sex therapist, Keesling offers the reader a uniquely intimate perspective into the male psyche, drawing on the wealth of her experience with male clients of all ages. And she shares these insights in a straightforward, sometimes humorous, conversational (but never crude) way that made me completely comfortable with the subject and confident in her expertise. Best of all, I learned a lot more about men than I expected to...how their bodies and minds work, the way they think and feel about sex, and the changes men experience as they age. I was surprised to learn how differently men and women experience sex. Keesling dispels many myths about men, their sexuality and the aging process. I learned that maintaining a man's sexual vitality is a loving gift any woman can give to her man. Keesling provides simple, proven techniques for helping yourself and your man overcome those myths and embrace the changes nature has in store. There's no requirement for women to become sexual acrobats or men to become supermen. This isn't really about "spicing up" your love life, becoming a porno star or fantasy fulfillment....although I'm sure your man will be pleasantly surprised....mine certainly was! Keesling's methods are actually empowering, focused on gaining a better understanding of your man's emotional and physical changes and learning new ways to make love to him...methods that any woman can easily employ, with or without the man's knowledge. These techniques are designed not only to preserve a couple's sexual vitality...they also encourage the kind of emotional and spiritual bonding we all hope to forge with our partner.

This is a wonderful primer for making the second half of your life even fresher and more exciting than the first! I recommend it highly.

Fantastic book

Now this book on sexuality and aging is wonderful! Barbara is amazing. So warm and funny and just a superb champion of engaging in the changes with joy and humor and love. I would and have already recommended this book to others who are approaching or have met "the 50's". The ideas are gentle and loving and fun. Yes, this book is the best I have read on the topic.
I may just be giving it out as gifts to all my siblings and friends! That's how much I appreciated her approach and knowledge.

Excellent approach to shake our paradigms about education, not only formal one.
Ken shows how we can integrate both sides of our brain and the importance of arts in doing that.
And most important: new business models, new corporate structures and new human behaviors trends, make it is necessary to develop new skills, to move from one discipline to another and it is each time more common to begin studying in one discipline (for example Laws) and then working on sales, management, consulting, etc. So, the personal career is not as simple as 50 years ago. It is highly probable you will move, and move and move. And you must prepare your skills for doing that. But formal education is not doing it job.

it shows you what good lashes look like and what bad lashes look like ...

I am new to eyelash extensions and after reading this book I feel very confident to start practicing on a maniquin and soon a few of my friends, it shows you what good lashes look like and what bad lashes look like the book is all in color except for 4 small pictures (I'm only bringing that up because some of the reviews state that it's not in color and I think they were made before the book was improved, also the black and white photos were hard to see what the issue was) the book gives example client lash tech paper work to go off l, history of lashing, in depth allergy precaution, business building advice, it gives step by step in depth lashing teqnique even advice on what you should consider on products to buy. I really enjoyed reading this it was quick and easy!

Arrived sooner than expected. If you're beginning a new career as an eyelash extension tech, this is definitely the book to get you started. Very informative, detailed instructions with color pictures as stated. I would definitely recommend purchasing this book.

This book it great for beginners I've been doing lashes for 5 years and it's a great read. Bought for a friend to get to know how to start lashing. The only thing I wish is that it would have had more about the eye and infections of the eye.
