This part of the brain has more neurons compared to the auditory processing regions used in normal reading. More neurons mean faster processing...it is designed to process everything a person sees at a very rapid pace all day. This book taught me the reasons on why I was a slow reader! After putting the lessons into effect, I have noticed an increase in compression and reading speed. I’m very excited to continue on with my speed-reading progress and would definitely recommend this book to anyone that wants to cut their reading time in half.

Educational, entertaining, and an overall great read

I ordered this book to read for one of my Ethics classes. I was worried about so much assigned reading to complete in one week, but it turned out to be a book that you just can't put down.

It still amazes me that this is a woman's real life story, the story of her family, and how they have impacted science and anyone who works or benefits from the use of cellular research. That means just about every single person is connected to Henrietta in one way or another.

This was a great book that I'm so glad I read. I learned a lot and it kept me entertained and fascinated for days. It will really change your perspective and make you appreciate this woman's contribution to our scientific and health fields.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks an instant classic – this is one of those stories that genuinely needed to be told.

From the very beginning there was something uncanny about the cancer cells on Henrietta Lacks’s cervix. Even before killing Lacks herself in 1951, they took on a life of their own. Removed during a biopsy and cultured without her permission, the HeLa cells (named from the first two letters of her first and last names) reproduced boisterously in a lab at Johns Hopkins — the first human cells ever to do so. HeLa became an instant biological celebrity, traveling to research labs all over the world. Meanwhile Lacks, a vivacious 31-year-old African-American who had once been a tobacco farmer, tended her five children and endured scarring radiation treatments in the hospital’s “colored” ward.
In “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” Rebecca Skloot introduces us to the “real live woman,” the children who survived her, and the interplay of race, poverty, science and one of the most important medical discoveries of the last 100 years. Skloot narrates the science lucidly, tracks the racial politics of medicine thoughtfully and tells the Lacks family’s often painful history with grace. She also confronts the spookiness of the cells themselves, intrepidly crossing into the spiritual plane on which the family has come to understand their mother’s continued presence in the world. Science writing is often just about “the facts.” ­Skloot’s book, her first, is far deeper, braver and more wonderful.
This work has the most human of stories at its core, and never deviates from that important, and often heartbreaking, humanity. When science appears, it does so effortlessly, with explanations of cell anatomy or techniques like “fluorescence in situ hybridization” seamlessly worked into descriptions of the coloured wards of Johns Hopkins hospital to Lacks’s hometown of Clover, Virginia.
But The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is not a comfortable read. I visibly winced at descriptions of Henrietta’s blackened, burned skin after multiple rounds of devastating radiation treatments. I put the book down with a heavy sigh after reading about the experiments that black Americans have been unwittingly subjected to over the years. I cried twice, at events that I can’t talk about without seriously spoiling the book. But it is uplifting too, particularly in a stand-out chapter where Henrietta’s children, Deborah and Zakariyya, visit a cancer researcher to see their mother’s cells under a microscope.

All of this is to be expected of a book that refuses to shy away from tackling important themes – the interplay between science and ethics, the question of who owns our bodies, and the history of racism in the US. And yet for all its grand scope, skilful writing and touching compassion, there is one simple element that makes As a final thought, I was struck by the parallels between Henrietta’s cells and her story. Henrietta’s entire family history was eventually condensed into a small sliver of cells that you could carry in a glass vial. They have achieved immortality, used by scientists throughout the world. Similarly, her entire life has been condensed into a moving tale and an exceptional book that you could read in a comfortable day. By right, it will achieve the same immortal status.

Like anyone who took bio in high school and college

Let me start off by saying that I’ve never really been that interested in science. History, yes. Literature, of course. Science, not so much. So, when I first read a review of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (circa 2010 in the New York Times Book Review) I surprised myself by wanting to read the book at all. Still, it’s a book about cells… so it took me a while to actually get around to reading it.

Like anyone who took bio in high school and college, I must have come across the HeLa cell in a textbook at one point or another. But I guess it never registered because, before this book, I had no idea what they were and that they all came from the same person. (Had I known that, bio class might have been a tad more interesting.) To me, it seems Rebecca Skloot has managed the unthinkable. She has made cell division entertaining. As I read the book, I was really invested in those cells. I was invested because I knew where they came from and how they had been procured. Tell me a good story and you have me hooked. And a good story Ms. Skloot did tell. She told many stories, in fact. The stories of the cells and Henrietta and the doctors and Henrietta’s children and friends and neighbors and even the author herself. I enjoyed reading them all.

About the Author
Robert Hoekman Jr is a columnist and contributing editor for the revered motorcycle culture and lifestyle magazine Iron & Air. He has authored several books and dozens of articles for a range of publications, including Fast Company magazine's Co.Design blog. He has spoken on design and other topics to packed rooms at events all over the world. Robert's talents for questioning and challenging conventional wisdom have earned him success in a myriad of professional interests, including design, writing, editing, design strategy consulting, and public speaking. He rode motorcycles exclusively for the first nine years he had a license (not bothering with a car until he was 26 years old), and has logged more miles on two wheels than on four. The 2012 Triumph Bonneville he rides today is his only vehicle. He has used it to straighten thousands of bent roads on the way to and through Arizona's quirky and eccentric towns and destinations. Robert lives in downtown Phoenix, Arizona with his partner Jodi and their two dogs, Max and Daisy.

Great book.

Good read, but I was hoping for a bit more on the resources used by the builders to actually do the build. There is a lot of info on aesthetics and what they use for inspiration, but I'm looking to better understand the tools they need and how they acquired the skills to do some of the work.

More of a book for bike designers, rather than 'builders' or mechanics.

A well-laid out explanation of custom motorcycle design as it exists in today's culture. However, the book is called "The Build," and that may be somewhat misleading for some customers. The book isn't a tutorial book for building a bike. I think it's more of a book to give you guidelines on what to know if you wish to design a bike. It almost assumes you are already a bit mechanically inclined, because they kind of display and talk about many of the parts and tools you'll need in certain builds, but it doesn't go into specifics about maintenance or anything in that nature.

I'd say this book is more valuable to designers than mechanics, which is fine because that's what I got it for in the first place. Lots of great reference photos, anatomy explanation on various types of custom motorcycle builds, vocab layout and explanation, et cetera. I like the book.

Jumpstarting my new addiction.

I bought this book last week and haven't been able to put it down. It's made my desire to ride turn into a need to get a bike and make it my own. Rob has compiled the right amount of knowledge to get me caught up on the parts and foundation, but even more he talks about the design behind a Motorcycle. This is not only one I'll read again but one I'll flaunt any chance I get.

Japanese Ink Painting

Among my eight Sumi-e instruction books, this is number One. In my class half of the people use this.I even saw it at an artist gallery in Smithfield,Virginia, where a local artist had it in his shop and was using it. The book is small, the instructions concise, clear and to the point. No wasting of space in demonstrations and words. Great for the beginner and up.The book is small and light enough to carry around and review again and again. And it is very inspiring for any artist pursuing the art of sumie. And, above all, it is affordable - the price is right.

A NICE AND HELPFUL SUPPLEMENTAL COOKBOOK.

This 1996 work is one of those cookbooks that has sort of flown under the radar of most who are interested in cooking authentic Indian dishes. It is a rather chubby, 288 pages, and oversized paper back and unfortunately the cover is not as eye catching as some which I feel is one of the reasons it has been overlooked. I personally found this one buried in our library, check it out three times and have learned much. I always look at any cookbook that has "complete" in its title with a skeptical eye, and true to form, this one cannot really be called "complete," but it is certainly a wealth of information.

Most of the more traditional dishes are represented her and the author has thrown in quite a few extremely regional dishes just to make it interesting. I will say that pound for pound, page for page, this work probably has more meat dishes (meat meaning mutton and lamb in this case) that most offerings of this size. Of course vegetables are well represented as well as fish and chicken.

The author has provided us with a nice glossary which is most helpful and then the book is broken down into traditional format with chapters on Pickles and Chutneys, Breads, Rice and Dhals, Vegetables, Fish, Chicken and Eggs, Meat, Sweets and Snacks and Savouries. Those who are unfamiliar with Indian cooking will find themselves making many trips back to the glossary, this is particularly true of the spices and meat cuts.

The directions are good but are a bit more vague in nature as the author takes the approach in many cases of "a little of this and a bit of that and add to taste." This will force the user of this book to do a lot of experimentation, which of course in the long run is a good thing, but can be a bit frustrating at time. I do like the way that the author has designated each and every recipe as mild, medium, hot or very hot. On the other hand, vagueness again is sometimes a problem. Several dishes are for "liver" and the author does not specify the liver of what. Some call for "meat," but again, what kind of meat is not mentioned.

This is a book I will eventually purchase to add to my collection as it does have some unique recopies, but I will be in no hurry to do so as long as the library has it available. I feel that to glean the greatest good from this book that a person should probably be somewhat familiar with Indian cooking. I would not want this one to be my first or one and only book on the subject. It is though, a great supplemental type of cookbook.

Nice generalized black and white drawings are plentiful and well executed although they have very little to do with the dish being prepared.

One of the best texts in the field?!?!

I'm a graduate psychology student (not from the author's hometown of Reno, NV) and was looking forward to my cognitive psychology class. However, this text has made this class a negative experience.
Solso would be better served by not belaboring the basics of cognitive psychology (short-term memory, visual perception, etc.) while then jumping into inadequately explained models. For example, on pages 331-333, Solso exposes us to the Whorfian hypothesis. However, he never says exactly what it postulates. Instead, he talks about "what Whorf concluded" or "what the hypothesis suggests". Unfortunately, this is common. These models are frequently illustrated with "boxes" that are not adequately explained in the text and are therefore confusing (flip to the figure on p. 501 for an example). In contrast, explanations of simple concepts are repeatedly explained. This gives the text a "cut and paste" feel. Also contributing to this feel is the structure. What is the point of two different sections on neurology in chapter 11? I'm at a loss as to why he interrupts any flow there may have been to do this. Also, Solso would also benefit from summarizing sections- he seems wrapped up in the details but frequently misses the bigger picture. He would also serve his readers by occasionally letting them in on how this information is applicable (and this would help make those annoying models that he loves seem relevant). This text is woefully inadequate in this area. Another complaint is the material covered. Solso suggests that the text covers a lot of ground (he's correct) and that it may be best to cover this material over two terms. I recommend that the text could be made more concise by simply sticking to cognitive psychology and avoid devoting entire chapters to development and AI.
Having said that, Solso does show potential and his dry sense of humor creeps out now and then and is welcomed. It is the content that makes this text a frustrating experience (I loved cognitive psychology as an undergrad). I'm amazed that this is a text that has gone through six editions. The seventh needs a major overhaul. Not in terms of keeping up with current research (which, Solso seems to do), but in terms of readability. I will recommend that our department use another text (I refuse to believe that there are no better cognitive texts out there). To any instructors out there who are rating this book favorably, I would ask your students what they think. And to any scholars out there who are asked by Solso to provide suggestions for the next addition, I beg you to take this seriously rather than being content as a mere "acknowledgement."

Buy with Caution!

As a senior psychology major at a selective liberal arts college, I have read many psychology textbooks including those covering cognition. This book is by far the worst one I have read. The text is poorly written, confusing, and very boring. The author repeats himself throughout the chapters, and takes too long to make a point. Many students from our Cognitive Psychology class have find it difficult to study from this book for our exams. The book just doesen't flow. Before you purchase this book, try to read a sample from it to see how you like it. You may save a lot of money!

Cognitive Psychology in Good Order

This cognitive psychology textbook is written for the undergraduate psychology major. It targets the expected areas of the field, filling the gap between a prerequisite course in sensation and perception and related topics in linguistics, philosophy and cognitive science. Its fifteen chapters correspond roughly to the weeks of a semester-length cognition course. The eighth edition reorganizes the chapters "...to better reflect the order of cognitive processing" relative to the order in the seventh edition. This order is logical and lends itself to sequential reading of chapters in a course. A good thing, since we all know that some students will read them in this order, even if we assign them a different one.

The authors define "...cognitive psychology [a]s the study of the human mind: its biology, its thoughts, its reasoning process, its language, its memory." While they connect to other disciplines, for the most part they avoid the temptation of "physics envy." They do not reduce everything to neuroscience (nor behaviorism) in a quest to seem more "scientific." There is a good selection of both current and classic references and each chapter ends with a smaller, more focused set of related readings. The "hmmm...?" questions at the beginning of each chapter are thought-provoking and provide an effective advance organizer for the chapter. Struggling students will find the presentation easy to follow; advanced students will find guidance to further learning.

The book is highly recommended for use as an undergraduate text. I suggest supplementing it with selected readings from cognitive science more widely, such as those found in Current Directions in Cognitive Science.
