Due to these facts, quality improvements and cost reductions are the major goals of the future. Value management and value analysis have very similar key intentions: function improvements and cost minimization. To assure the development of products, which fulfill the customer's needs and can be sold at the price the customer is willing to pay, value management needs to become an essential part of the development process. A key aspect of this is that eighty to ninety percent of a product's value is influenced during its design and development. This thesis gives an introduction to the basics and the importance of organizational impact of value management, including its efforts and benefits. After the characterization of the methods and tools a description of the capability and the distinction to target costing is shown. The following derivation starts with the standard development process and the design process according to VDI 2221, followed by the integrated product development and the specific features of APQP and VDA 4.3 - representing the automotive product development. After presenting already known approaches for the integration of value management into the development process, three new approaches are shown and discussed: using a novel construction kit, using a method integration or frontloading of value analysis, where value analysis activities are being set up at the outset. As the subtitle of her book state, "one combination of points can treat many diseases." Dr Lee found the theoretical basis for this combination in the Nei Jing. "When the stomach and spleen, the central jiao, are attached by emotion, pure qi cannot ascend to the brain, and the evil qi, the waster, cannot descent," she explains. To facilitate the free flowing of qi in the central jiao, to benefit the liver as well as the kidneys and spleen, to force the evil qi to go down, and to improve brain function, Dr. Lee chooses a bilateral combination of 10 points. Miriam Lee has been practicing acupuncture for over 40 years. She came to the United States from Singapore where she lived for 17 years after leaving mainland China in 1949. In China, she was a nurse and midwife before becoming an acupuncturist and lived through the Japanese occupation and World War II.

When she arrived in California, acupuncture was illegal. So Miriam worked on a factory assembly line and gave treatments quietly out of her home, later sharing a space with an open-minded MD. In April 1974, Miriam was arrested for practicing medicine without a license. With the overwhelming support of her patients, she was acquitted and made part of an acupuncture research project at San Francisco University where she practiced until 1976 when acupuncture was legalized in California.

Miriam Lee has been an important voice in the promotion of acupuncture and acupuncture legislation in California, has taught hundreds of Western students, and has treated thousands of patients. Today, Miriam is semi-retired and resides in Palo Alto, CA.

About the Author
Toni-Michelle C. Travis is Associate Professor of Government and Politics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She is also a faculty member in the Women’s Studies and African American Studies Programs. Professor Travis received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago. Her areas of research and teaching include race and gender in political participation, and urban politics. She has served as the President of the National Capital Area Political Science Association and the Women’s Caucus of the American Political Science Association. She hosts Capital Regional Roundtable, a cable television show, and is a frequent commentator on Virginia politics.

Karen E. Rosenblum is Associate Professor of Sociology and Vice President for University Life at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She is a former Director of Women’s Studies and the Women’s Studies Research and Resource Center and a faculty member in Cultural Studies. Professor Rosenblum received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Her areas of research and teaching include sex and gender, language, and deviance.

Thorough exploration of current energy technology

I am a physics instructor. While I have not used this textbook in a class, I have taught an introductory course "Physics of Energy Production" and reviewed this book as part of that project.

Subject matter: This is a textbook for engineering students. It covers energy technology: cost, operation and evaluation. There are 17 chapters, covering all areas of practical energy use, including modern topics such as climate change, solar, wind, geothermal, bioenergy and CO2 emissions.

Level: Though there is some review, this is not an introductory textbook. A background in introductory physics (mechanics and thermodynamics) and other basic science and algebraic math is assumed. However, energy technologies are covered assuming no prior knowledge.

Readability/appearance: The book is easy to follow and provides context. It contains well-labeled simple plots, tables, equations and plenty of numerical examples. It has an attractive colorful cover. All photographs in the text are in black and white.

Homework problems: There is a brief summary at the end of each of the 17 chapters, as well as a list of resources and approximately ten reasonable homework problems. Some exercises encourage students to use the Internet. SI units are used. Online resources and additional problems are available.

Course structure: This textbook is a current and thorough exploration of energy technology. It would be appropriate for upper undergraduate engineering students or engineering professionals wanting to remain current in their field. A one-semester course could probably cover about ten of the seventeen chapters, saving some of the special topics for student research/presentation projects at the end of the course. Be sure to include the last chapter, Chapter 17; it provides closure and an optimistic and strategic look toward the future, an important part of any course for an upcoming engineer.

Wide-ranging introduction to becoming an energy systems engineer

This textbook is aimed squarely at the engineering student or professional engineer.
It reflects the current state of analysis of energy systems; focusing on existing technologies, it is not a preparation for inventors. It could be considered a beginning of a study on macro-scale modeling of a global energy system, and it will prepare professionals to make the best of state-of-the-art technologies.
The contents include diverse topical units that engineers are expected to understand, like economic tools for energy systems, climate science, and calculus of turbine blade design.
Life cycle analysis of various systems is clearly important to the authors. I might say the authors are relatively sanguine about the economic viability of growing technologies; to instructors bent on leaving conclusions to the individual, some sections might seem to some like indoctrination into the collective, current feeling of future-thinking engineers, be they thoroughly grounded in reality.
The writing includes practical wisdom from experience with systems, for example in the discussion on page 341 on solar hot water systems. Experimental examples include not only results but useful notes on methodology.
The language is clear but impersonal; I haven't found any errors in grammar or content. I prefer to teach with more engaging dialog--I would intersperse exercises with the reading to help break the third-person monotony. Like most engineering courses, the book requires facility with multi-variable analysis, multi-step problems, different systems of units, and physical thinking. Many passages and exercises require understandings explained in previous chapters. However, I would consider teaching with some of the global-systems topics after one or two of the technology-specific chapters in the middle of the book. I think it's trite for textbooks to include a tiny section on pre-industrial technology necessarily at the beginning of every book, but at least these authors use the history to point to the incredible amount of energy we've only recently tapped.
I've run a charity for energy educators for eight years, during which I've met thousands of energy instructors, exchanging serious consultation on curriculum with many of them; I can say that this text represents most of the best content.

Great Book for Introductory Course

This is a wonderful book for an introductory energy course for engineering, students, or students with some technical background. I found the breadth of topics to be especially suited for helping students understand the role of energy in our current lives and the potential implications of a future with different types, and amounts, of energy resources available. The book's approach, starting with some background material and "tools" that will enable students to analyze energy systems from a technical perspective (systems analysis; economics) and then covering both stationary and transportation-related energy systems, makes a lot of sense for engineering students from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. I especially like the chapters on transportation energy technologies, the presentation of the "well to wheel" analysis, and the chapter that applies a systems approach to analyzing transportation energy technologies. Providing students with the tools to analyze choices from a broad, systems perspective will assist them not only in their technical careers but also on a daily basis as they make energy-related choices in their personal lives.

Short on substance and details

Having purchased two other books of this nature by Mr. Lang, I placed myself on the waiting list at Amazon and waited months the get the book in my hands. I did not hesitate to break it out of the packaging and dove right into it. The first forty-five pages were dedicated to the history and other background information necessary to get a good understanding of the Greenes' design concepts and the practical methods used by the Hall brothers to construct the pieces. I was very disappointed with the scant number of details that one might expect from such a technical manual. There are a few photographs that show some of the processes (most of us know how to use a shoulder plane) but what was lacking were drawings to reinforce or to make clear some of the principles Lang was trying to describe. The book read like a series of essays rather than a substantive, technical manual with supporting details.

The actual measured drawings are just that as they lack certain pertinent construction details. I am a fairly skilled woodworker, having started the craft at the age of fourteen and have continued until today, even after a successful career in architecture; and what I have concluded is that this book was hurriedly put together to meet some preset deadline. It is my opinion that if more time and thought was given by the author to the details it would have resulted in a much better book.

So I am sorely disappointed with the contents and the lack of detailing and would not recommend this book to anyone but very experienced woodworkers. Mr. Lang has missed the mark this time and what a pity.

I really like this book. We just bought a house and I am going to make or replace all the furniture with G&G inspired designs. This book is a great addition to my woodworking library for that purpose.
