This conference was organized with the important support of Transilvania University of Brasov, Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences and Romanian Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, to whom we thank very much. This conference was dedicated to Professor Ioan Goia, at his 80th birthday, because he was a great Professor at Transilvania University of Brasov for many years, and he supported these conferences from the very beginning. He is an extraordinary Professor, who had astonishing accomplishments, kindness, patience, dedication and optimism. Professor Ioan Goia is a great example for the younger generations, and he is always remembered for his great devotion to teaching and helping students. The research and innovation in engineering in general, and in particular advanced composite materials engineering, are ever more important in everyday activities, and they include, between many other techniques, geometric models, analysis, simulation, optimization and decision making tools, within a computer-generated environment, that accelerates product development, which is the main purpose of any engineering effort. The applications are very diverse and include manufacturing, aerospace, civil engineering structures, communication, geotechnics, flow problems, automotive engineering, predictive surgery, transportation, geo-environmental modeling, biomechanics, electromagnetism, medicine, prediction of natural physical events, and metal forming, just to mention a few. These Proceedings of COMAT 2014 include 50 papers, which analyze many important practical applications. The topics range from energy release rate evaluation in sandwich composite structures to structural synthesis, analysis and design of the modular anthropomorphic grippers for industrial robots, from in-plane vibrations of pinned-fixed heterogeneous curved beams under a concentrated force to modeling and simulation of an acoustic cloak, from the finite elements analysis vs. experimental buckling behavior of the thinwalled plane gussets to the mathematical model of a special vehicle clutch servomechanism. We want to thank very much Professor Sorin Vlase for his remarkable effort and dedication for the organization of this international conference, Professor Gy�rgy Szeidl for his distinguished chairmanship, and the organizing committee for their continuous assistance. We also thank all the conference participants their interesting presentations, and Mrs. Sophia Dediu for her assistance in preparing this volume. There is, certainly, much more that can be said about these engineering research than we presented here. The voluminous notes gave me a richer understanding of this work. The book is beautfully laid out and much easier to read than other "annotated" books. I wish the author's would tackle ULYSSES next.

The Living Dead

My only complete reading of Dubliners was from this version. What makes Dubliners so amenable to an annotated edition is that it is essentially an immediately accessible work of fiction - Joyce's only (the Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man being slightly trickier). Why are annotations so crucial to this work? The multiple place and character references make up a significant portion of these stories: Without a knowledge of the settings you're left with the virtuoso, stand-alone, psychological complexities of Joyce's style.

If you like Joyce's fiction (or are new to Joyce's fiction), this is a *fun* copy (and excellent introduction). These stories were written for, and read by, people who *did* understand the numerous contemporary Irish references as well as the history and iconography of the Roman Catholic Church. My experience of Dubliners is that this is the only truly readable version. Enjoy these heartwarming yarns of a city's moral and psychological twilight: Paralysis, disillusionment, collapse. If you are Roman Catholic, be warned - Joyce was a massive apostate.

A 20th Century Masterpiece

James Joyce's "Dubliners" is a shining example of the beautifully expressive power of the English language. The book offers a compilation of short stories, each as intriguing and captivating as those that precede and follow.
To truly enjoy the remarkable magnificence of this book, it is important to first recognize the three key aspects of each story: symbolism, imagery, and character development. The first of which to be examined is the most vital, as each story of the book is enveloped and completely built upon Joyce's deep and profound symbolism, with each character also defined by the same.
We can first look upon the title character of "Eveline," for whom the lattice-work of a window represents the bars of her prison-cell, and the fading streetlights beyond depict the hope of her life dissipating in the darkness of ever-encroaching night.
Easy to recognize, the symbolism of "Dubliners" is amazingly proficient in its ability to provide a deeper insight and understanding that truly does raise this book above the stature of its otherwise common stories. Joyce's masterful use of this literary technique is then placed within simple linguistic structures that are easily identified, yet powerful and splendidly thought provoking in its very core and concept, as well as by the nature in which it is employed. The careful explication of, and adequate attention give to this symbolism is very relevant, as it is essential in achieving a greater appreciation of each story being told, the characters portrayed within, and of Joyce to entertain with each.
Wild and vivid imagery frames the story through the author's immense, yet extremely enjoyable descriptive nature. A majority of each story's progression takes place between the dialogue, which is sparse to say the least, giving ample opportunity for Joyce's spectacular, though usually dark and gloomy imagery. It is also within this narrative that the characters spring to life. Being depicted as ordinary people suffering internal conflicts, they are tightly bound to the reader through relative and universal experiences. Eloquent and poignant examples of this can be found in the title characters of both "Eveline," and "Araby."
The central characters of "Dubliners," at first glance, appear quite flat, as seen in their dialogue. But upon closer inspection, the depth of Joyce's imaginative narrative bring them round, and fully-developed. Each of these characters, in their own respective way, is brilliantly constructed through elaborate thoughts and feelings, which, ironically, display the faults, failures, and weaknesses that they bring into their personal struggles. This appears to be Joyce's unique and quite genius way of building to climax, in which the audience is forced to believe in the strength and courage of characters of which we already know them to be deficient. It is, therefore, a cleverly devised surprise when they remain weak-willed, and are lead into despair, even though this path has been clearly laid out from beginning to end. Correlations can then be drawn between these characters, and the settings of the stories in which they appear. Being the same throughout, his setting is the Irish city of Dublin, which Joyce goes out of his way to portray as bereft of light, warmth, and color.
Though Joyce's obvious theme and intent was the portrayal of the internal conflicts of common people, this subject does become redundant when replicated throughout all stories of the book, offering the one real drawback of "Dubliners."
Overall, Joyce's simplistic use of language is evocative, as it conveys complex ideas in very simple words, making it an easy read for even the least literary-minded of readers. The thought and story progression is virtually flawless, being laid out in a proper and unmistakeable order that can be widely enjoyed for both its surface-value, and its underlying literary techniques. The philosophical themes are relative to virtually anyone, making this a book well worth spending time on.

About the Author
Olson was converted and called to ministry while studying engineering and majored in theology at Dallas Seminary. Ministering in Pakistan (1956-64) he founded the Pakistan Fellowship of Evangelical Students, and today 1600 students participate in 95 Bible study groups. He ministered in Urdu in indigenous Brethren assemblies, helped organize the Evangelical Fellowship of Pakistan, and edited correspondence lessons. While teaching theology and missions at Northeastern Bible College for 24 years, he spoke in 300 churches and pastored 4 in metro NYC, was Bible answerman on WFME for a decade, and a trustee member of 3 mission agencies. He received a doctorate in missiology from Trinity Int. Univ. and is currently a Bible/missions conference speaker. His wife, Dottie, was a missionary to Zambia and Korea.

A Biblically Balanced Approach to Soteriology

C. Gordon Olson has done a marvelous job of evaluating both Calvinism and Arminianism, showing the deficiencies of both systems, plotting a more Biblical approach to soteriology in this volume. When it comes to soteriology, I doubt that any volume will find 100% agreement with any particular reader all points addressed, but this volume comes about as close as I could hope for in presenting a balanced, Biblical soteriology. Along with Olson's book, I would also recomment Michael Eaton's No Condemnation: A Theology of Assurance of Salvation.

I found myself picking it up and spending time looking at vairous chapters even after having finished the first read. The depth of thought and research was all I could have hoped for and the index will make it very useful in the future when I have questions. Of specific help was the way Acts 13:48 was explained. I liked it enough to loan out my first copy and buy four more to give to men I hope will give it a read.

Excellent in depth study

It's a book a theology, but it is also an investigation about the Gospel message grounded on the Word of God (with many references to Greek words). I like the inductive method and the balance of the author. He has the courage to show that Calvinism and Arminianism alike can be a hindrance to see the true Gospel.

A great read and cannot wait to read the next installment

Although I have not read books 2-5 in this series, I was able to read the book and understand everything for the most part. I did have a little difficulty understanding the Shadows completely but I am sure once I go and read the middle books I will be up to speed. I still think the book could be read without reading the other books but it will leave you with a few questions.
The story line flowed well without those nasty grammar and misspellings that often slow down the flow and take some of your reading enjoyment. The sex scenes were steamy and didn’t seem as if they were added just to ‘sell’ the book. The New Orleans setting could be felt through the food and location descriptions. (However, I still cannot wrap my brain around tuna with crepes.) I was cheering on the good guys, biting my lip with worry over the victims and smiling by the end of the book and wondering if there may soon be the pitter patter of little feet entering their lives.
If you are a fan of the series then you will want to dive right on in and find out how things have been going for the newlyweds. If you have never read a book from the Bourbon Street series, you can start with this one but I would recommend starting with book one and working up to this one so you are not left wondering about the inner workings of the Circle, the Brotherhood, and the Heavenly angels. I would recommend this series and even the Crescent City Fae series as they are both well written and inventive works.

This series just keeps you cheering them on in their adventures that take them to different places and through the veil. Jade does not lead a boring life, since she's come to NOLA she's been a magnet for the unsavory things that lurk. Love her and her coven and friends, they definitely keep us entertained. I will be getting started on Piper`s adventures also, can only imagine where she will take us. Great Job!!!

I just LOVE this series !

I just wish that I didn't have to wait for the next book to come out. Deanna is one of my favorite authors. I really recommend all of her stories, cuz I've read most of them and I loved all the characters. I lose so much time, cuz I just couldn't put the book down. So, if you want to read a really great story, just pick up one of Deanna Chase's books, sit down, turn the phone off and enjoy.

A perceptive ethnography of the mobilization of history in support of a way of life that is disappearing as the region’s inhabitants adopt a more mobile, cosmopolitan, and urbane lifestyle, Sorge’s work demonstrates how social memory continues to shape the present in the Sardinian highlands.

About the Author
Robert Eckstein, an editor at O'Reilly, works mostly on Java books (notably Java Swing) and is also responsible for the XML Pocket Reference and Webmaster in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition. In his spare time he has been known to provide online coverage for popular conferences. He also writes articles for JavaWorld magazine. Robert holds bachelor's degrees in computer science and communications from Trinity University. In the past, he has worked for the USAA insurance company and more recently spent four years with Motorola's cellular software division.

The Servlet chapter rocks!!!

Jason Hunter has done it again. His servlet chapter is simply awesome. He offers some really juicy bytes of information. Give the man more chapters. The other chapters are good too. I would give the book five stars but the Performance chapter is worthless. That came as a surprise because I enjoyed Jack Shirazi performance book.

An appetizer that leaves you hungry for more.
Patterns and best practices have been around for a long time. They solve problem domains not directly addressed by the language itself ie., repeatable solutions to family of application development issues -- be it architecture, deployment or testing. For a complex platform like J2EE, use of best practices can make or break a project.
Just what the doctor ordered - Java Enterprise Best Practices is a collection nuggets of wisdoms. It is a compendium of idioms classified based on various enterprise Java areas written the most acclaimed authors in the field (Jason Hunter, Bret McLaughlin, Hans Bergsten et al). Ranging from most widely used EJBs to the latest additions such as JMX and JSTL, each chapter presents the reader with most widely accepted norms of using technologies such as - EJB, Servlets, JDBC, XML, RMI, JMX, Internationalization, JSP, JavaMail. Chapters on XML and RMI are the best of the lot.
I was surprised to note the omission of JMS, given that its popularity when compared with other things such as JMX or JSTL. The last chapter on performance tuning lacks depth and reads more like hastily scribbled notes.
Can best practices be argued? Absolutely! The first chapter of the book says just that. It is important to bear that in mind while you read through the chapters.
While a seasoned J2EE developer idioms may find a few things trivial, it is quite a good reference to keep handy if you are developing real-life applications.

This book unlike other most books is made by Java
experts in their own field. the book assumes prior
knowledge of the topics and does not intend to take
a beginner from ignorance to knowledge.
this book is intended not for beginners but some
experts in the Java domain designing enterprise
level systems or even maintaining them for system
performance and ehancements.
The book is well written and all the potential
gotchas and the mistakes commonly done in application
design and development are outlined with appropriate
alternate solutions.
The book covers all aspects of java and ejb application
development and their best practices.
Overall, this a good book to have and will be used
by experienced java developers and the not so
experienced.
