Review

"In order to deal with both 'reality' and representation, Karras had to discover and exploit a wide variety of sources. She has skillfully woven together the records of town, manorial, and diocesan courts with insights gained from literary sources such as saints' lives, sermons, plays, and fabliaux....From the book's title to its conclusion, Karras emphasizes that control of women's independence, much more than sexuality, was at stake in the unending insistence on the shameful nature and image of women who were not 'safely under the dominion of any one man--husband, father, master.' Karras is not the first to make this point, but she argues it with authority and with a wealth of illuminating detail....This book makes a significant contribution to our appreciation of the social and cultural history not of prostitutes alone, but of all women in medieval England."--Clarissa Atkinson, American Historical Review

"Karras has put together the definitive study of prostitution in late medieval England....Avoiding the problems inherent in many other studies, Karras treads a careful and well-articulated path between seeing prostitutes only as victims or describing them as agents in control of their own destiny....Karras has written an original, stimulating, and important book that will become a standard text on the history of prostitution."--Renaissance Quarterly

"Ruth Karras's new book will become a standard text on medieval prostitution, but it will also be required reading for anyone interested in gender, sexuality, and women in the middle ages. Drawing on literary texts, religious materials, legal documentation, and other sources, Karras places prostitutes--so often seen as marginal and atypical women--at the center of gender relations in medieval England. Her sophisticated and compelling argument is a major contribution to women's history, gender history, and medieval history."--Judith Bennett, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

"A study of prostitution should reveal the convergence of many social forces: fear of female sexuality and venality, the fine line between approved and condemned behavior, the regulation of commercial activity, the double standard, and the distinction between the moral economy of the neighborhood and that of the fathers of society. Ruth Karras touches all these points and also turns to the voice of creative and sermon literature, as well as case studies, to put flesh on the tale."--Joel Rosenthal, State University of New York, Stony Brook

"Ruth Karras here again displays her extraordinary ability to unpack the medieval meanings of twentieth-century terms that do not adequately describe medieval phenomena. Her study replaces the modern concept of prostitution with the more accurate and very wide-ranging term "whoredom", bringing to bear and synthesizing a vast array of sources, from the legal and archival to the literary, artistic, and theological."--Edward Peters, University of Pennsylvania

From the Back Cover
"Common women" in medieval England were prostitutes, whose distinguishing feature was not that they took money for sex but that they belonged to all men in common. Common Women: Prostitution and Sexuality in Medieval England tells the stories of these women's lives: their entrance into the trade because of poor job and marriage prospects or because of seduction or rape; their experiences as street-walkers, brothel workers or the medieval equivalent of call girls; their customers, from poor apprentices to priests to wealthy foreign merchants; and their relations with those among whom they lived. Through a sensitive use of a wide variety of imaginative and didactic texts, Ruth Karras shows that while prostitutes as individuals were marginalized within medieval culture, prostitution as an institution was central to the medieval understanding of what it meant to be a woman. This important work will be of interest to scholars and students of history, women's studies, and the history of sexuality.

Common Women, Uncommon Lives
By Shawn M. Warswick
Ruth Mazo Karras is currently a professor at the University of Minnesota, having earned her Ph.D. and M.Phil. in history from Yale University, and has published eight books as well as numerous articles in professional journals. Common Women, published in 1996 by Oxford University Press, is a well reasserted and well received book which looks at not only the experiences of prostitutes in the Middle Ages, it also examines the meaning of prostitution in the culture of the middle ages.

Karras argues “that prostitution deeply affected gender relations because its existence fostered the connection of feminine sexuality with venality and sin” which then justified the controlling of all women based on their sexuality. Karras conclusions are interesting as she asserts prostitution was a central pillar of medieval culture as it offered a necessary outlet for the sexual desires of men, which many people thought would undermine the social order if they were not relieved. She goes on to assert that the importance of the sex trade to our understanding of the medieval world is that understanding this phenomenon gives insight into how women responded to economic conditions by making choices for themselves whilst living in a system which afforded little opportunity to do so. Lastly, Karras says that, in a world which accepted the sex drive as natural, and yet, at the same time, set limits upon the fulfilling of that natural desire, prostitution was necessary development allowing society to function because it was central to the construction of gender in the culture of the time period.

Chapter one, “Prostitution and the Law” examines the legal understanding of what prostitution was and how it was regulated(as well as what law makers believed they were regulating). As the author notes, they understood prostitution as a commercial enterprise specifically but viewed these women as sexually immoral generally. Chapter two, “Brothels, Licit and Illicit,” discusses the brothel as an institution, one which sought to keep women sexually available for men while, at the same time, keeping these women under strict control. The next two chapters discuss the experiences of women who engaged in sex for money. Chapter three, “Becoming a Prostitution” deals with the things which influenced a woman to make the decision to become a prostitute. Karras notes that the economic structure did not favor women, and these were economic decisions. Chapter four, “The Sex Trade in Practice” is where Karras looks at the various ways in which prostitution is practiced and what types of clients came to them.

The last two chapters place prostitution into its social and cultural context. Chapter five, “Marriage, Sexuality, and Marginality” shows there is a difference between prostitutes and say a baker, in that the former comes with moral and ideological baggage attached to it in a way that no other “profession” does. Chapter six, “Saints and Sinners,” Karras says “the late medieval church’s teaching about prostitution and about whoredom must be seen against the background of a general hostility to sexuality and a widespread misogyny.” Having said that, she goes on to note the church’s view of women was not universally negative and that women did not internalize that view. Further, she notes that Medieval culture itself was not monolithically negative towards women as there were queens, holy women and other women who were both respected and revered. This is a somewhat more nuanced view offered than say Johnson, who sometimes comes across as seeing universal negativity whilst Karras sees various shades of grey so to speak.

As did the other historians discussed so far, Karras came out of the Vietnam-post Vietnam era, although she did so more to the tail end of the time period, having been a graduate student at the time of the “Reagan Revolution” of 1980 and the turn in American politics towards more conservative policies. Nonetheless, her work is still influenced by many of the trends started in the 1960’s including a desire to look at those people in history who were often ignored and a desire to insert women and their perspectives into the narrative. Thus her work is representative of subaltern studies while not being as theoretical as some of those works can be. Common Women also finds Karras using a gendered perspective and falls within the realm of women’s history. It also fits in well within the definition of social and cultural history. Finally, Karras uses some legal history, especially in the first chapter of the narrative.
This work is not only well researched but written in a very engaging and readable style, something which can be rare in the historical profession, especially when dealing with any sort of legal history. Karras does a remarkable job of not only crafting a narrative, but of questioning and commentating on the adequacy of the sources. The author also makes it clear that what is truly at stake is not the control of women’s sexuality, which is certainly important, but their overall independence. This work adds to our understanding of medieval social and cultural history overall, not just about prostitution, and is a significant contribution to the historiography of women’s medieval history.

Well Researched
By Jeffrey Leach
This is the last book I've had to read for my Medieval history class, which focused on women in the Middle Ages. We started out by examining mystics such as Hildegard of Bingen, Julian of Norwich, and Margery Kempe, and then looked at Eleanor of Aquitaine and Joan of Arc. I guess it is fitting to end on the lowest of the female population in this time period, the prostitute. This book, by Ruth Karras, provides an in-depth analysis of the role that the prostitute played in the male dominated world of the Middle Ages, but with a twist, as Karras uses her analysis to also examine sexuality in the same period. The focus is on English prostitutes, mostly due to accessibility of records. England had a fairly stable government, so records were better preserved. France, for example, lost many court rolls and other important records in the chaos of the Revolution in the 1790's.
Karras gives a broad sketch of the prostitute by showing how they were affected by laws. The laws served a dual purpose. They seemed to try and protect prostitutes from beatings and coercion, but also tried to keep them in a restricted place in society, by isolating them to the outskirts of town, and regulating both what they could wear and how they conducted themselves in their personal relationships. The power structure, according to Karras, seemed to subscribe to the theory that prostitution was a necessary evil, in that men needed an outlet for their sexual energy. If this need wasn't met, the general belief was that these men would resort to rape and other unpleasantness against the other ladies of the town/city. So while prostitutes were reviled, they were also accorded a role in society that was seen to fill an important need.
There's lots of stuff I'm leaving out, of course. Some books always give a revelation of sorts that the reader remembers long after the book has been read, and this one has a good one. England had very few legal brothels, but one was on the outskirts of London, in Southwark. These brothels were referred to as "stews", and this stew was actually owned by the Bishop of Winchester! He made quite a profit off the ladies, too. He didn't run the house directly, but appointed brothelkeepers who did the dirty work. An interesting role for the Church, don't you think? Actually, it sort of makes since in light of the belief that prostitution filled a social role of sorts. The government sure wasn't providing any sort of programs or assistance. The Church was the closest thing to a social service system (I'm way out on a limb here, I smell a research paper!) so maybe bishops running houses of ill repute wasn't so spectacular after all.
Copious notes at the end of the book show the astonishing amount of primary and secondary sources that Karras scoured through to construct the book. I'm impressed. This book certainly has an interest to the historian, but the casual reader would get a kick out of it too, as it isn't overly scholarly, and it reads fast at 142 pages. Well done, Dr. Karras!

Animal Weapons: The Evolution of Battle, by Douglas J. Emlen

"Outstanding . . . Emlen's book on animal warfare reveals a world far more fascinating and intriguing than one we could summon with our imagination." -The Seattle Times

Every animal relies on a weapon of some kind-cats have claws, eagles have talons, even the dogs we keep as pets have a respectable set of teeth. In rare cases, we find species whose weapons have become stunningly outsized, some with tusks so massive that those who wield them look like they should collapse under the weight. In Animal Weapons, biologist Douglas Emlen pulls readers into the worlds of these remarkable beasts, trekking through rainforests and mountain passes to unravel the mysteries of their weapons. Along the way, Emlen shows that the essential biology of animal arms races applies to our own weapons, too. A story that begins with biology becomes the story of all weapons, as Emlen seeks to determine where this parallel leaves us today, in a world filled with the deadliest weapons of all time-nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons of mass destruction.

“Outstanding . . . Emlen's book on animal warfare reveals a world far more fascinating and intriguing than one we could summon with our imagination.” ―The Seattle Times

“A fascinating account of how animal weaponry, both offensive (claws, horns, teeth) and defensive (armor, shelter, thorns, claws again) parallel human weaponry, both offensive (arrows, lances, swords, missiles, A-bombs) and defensive (armor, castles, spies). It's a compelling, fun, often scary analysis. And David Tuss's drawings, especially his animals, made me jealous.” ―Robert Krulwich, science correspondent for NPR and cohost of Radiolab

“A great deal of the living world really is red in tooth and claw. That important principle has needed a real biologist to illustrate and explain it, now accomplished dramatically by Emlen.” ―Edward O. Wilson, Pulitzer Prize–winning scientist, Harvard University

“Emlen's excellent writing will draw in readers intrigued by astonishingly powerful weapons, both in the wild and in the military, and how they have evolved owing to selective pressures.” ―Library Journal (starred)

“Absorbing . . . Throughout the book, Emlen's demonstrations of the many parallels between human and animal weapons are fascinating, even when the possibilities are frightening . . . Emlen is not a hurried or simplistic storyteller. He is a writer of nuance, and he traveled to many different environments to get the story.” ―Kirkus

“Emlen infuses scientific explanations with entertaining anecdotes from his field research at the University of Montana. Each step of the way, he provides parallels with human weapon development and design, from ancient civilizations to weapons of mass destruction, and the evolutionary process of animals. While his conclusions about the human arms race are dire, it is his description of animal weaponry in action and in evolution that will captivate.” ―Publishers Weekly

“One of our leading evolutionary biologists, Doug Emlen, delves into the deep meaning of entities as different as beetle horns and medieval castles, to take the reader on a joyous ride of discovery about nature and the human experience. Animal Weapons is an authoritative, knowledgeable, and epic narrative of one of the dominant themes of life on earth, including our own. Emlen's curiosity, passion, and storytelling prowess make this magisterial little volume leap from the page.” ―Neil Shubin, author of Your Inner Fish

“This is a great read not only for the stories of conflicts and weaponry in a diversity of animals, but also for the history of human weaponry, and the highly relevant message about arms races the author reads from both.” ―Bernd Heinrich, author of Winter World and Why We Run

“Animal Weapons is must read, especially those of us who are interested and concerned about human weapons development. As Douglas Emlen shows definitively, arms races are not something we as a species invented, but instead the most natural thing in the world.” ―Robert L. O'Connell, author of The Ghosts of Cannae and Fierce Patriot

“Doug Emlen has done a superb job of bringing together the stories of animal and human weapons. He makes the biology behind the evolution of weapons understandable for this soldier and engineer, and convincingly illustrates the human animal's problems in controlling or avoiding catastrophe in the age of weapons of mass destruction.” ―Lieutenant General John Myers

A cogent theory that borrows from biology, economics and military history to explain arms races. An enthralling read
By Nelson Amaya
"Arms races, and the natural history of extreme weapons, it turns out, is precisely the same" (p. 10). Douglas Emlen provides a wonderfully-written, sound theoretical explanation for the awe-inspiring variety and scale of weapons in animals - and puts it to use by drawing insightful parallels with human warfare. The evolutionary pressure that produces magnificent horns, sharp and large teeth and claws, as well as camouflage capabilities and division of labor within an animal species, operates in a remarkably similar ways to the development of military technology. In some special circumstances, this evolutionary process locks-in two sides on an explosive, energy-intensive, escalation.

A recipe consisting of three ingredients triggers these arm races. (In some cases, as with male fiddler crabs, arms races stop being metaphorical: males develop a single-oversized claw to deter and combat each other.) This process unfolds by sequentially adding the ingredients: sexual competition, plus the economic defensibility of resources, plus dueling. When all of these conditions are present, as Emlen describes drawing on his extensive field work on beetles, a costly equilibrium emerges where weapons grow and grow in size, depleting resources from other uses for all parties involved.

Sexual selection provides the first stepping stone. In sexual reproduction, whenever there is relative scarcity of gametes, asymmetrical parenting investment exists and turnaround times are high (i.e. the time between one birth and another), competition emerges. Illustrating with the selection pressures from female jacanas to male elephants, Emlen summarizes: "Sexual selection arises whenever individuals of one sex differ in their reproductive success. […] When differences in reproductive success get larger, the intensity of selection increases." (p. 69).

The second ingredient is economic defensibility. It serves no purpose to be in a position to defend resources if these resources are spatially impossible to protect. Weapons grown only when a benefit-cost threshold is surpassed, as "animals benefit most from fighting to guard territories when those territories contain valuable and limiting resources" (p. 75), and both the metabolic costs and exposure risks associated with the upkeep of these weapons can be compensated by gains in sexual competition, or resource protection, either by deterring conflict or by providing blunt-force advantages. Locations like tunnels, caves or burrows, therefore, are ideal for this second condition to hold as they allow an animal to reap the benefits of investing in larger weapons.

The final ingredient is dueling - the tendency for encounters to be one-on-one: "All else being equal, we expect species where males fight each other one-on-one to be more likely to evolve extreme weapons than species where males fight less predictably." (p. 91). Large antlers in deer, horns in beetles -which can represent more than 50% of the total body mass- or the asymmetric claws of fiddler crabs all appear as a by-product of layering this third condition over the other two.

Arms races diffuse through asymmetric war tactics. Sneak attacks, deception and ingenuity can render large weapons worthless. In the human version of an arms race, strategies like those in cyberwarfare can become increasingly effective to combat large, expensive, seemingly unbeatable weapons.

After positing the theory, Emlen turns to human warfare, describing how the construction of castles, warships and planes have all followed an arms race trajectory. He ends by describing the global peak of an arms race: the Cold War and the role that Weapons of Mass Destruction play in an escalating conflict. These weapons are unlike any other because "Collateral damage from weapons of mass destruction is likely to be staggering, and this changes the stakes of conflict" (p. 216). Then, the whole game becomes about brinkmanship and attempting to diffuse any escalation.

The book is full of fascinating examples of animal behavior, specially on sexual competition and the technological development of military power. It's a synthesis of Einstein's adage that "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler". Highly recommended.

A bridge too far
By Robert Ashton
Biologist Douglas Emlen in his new book "Animal Weapons" describes and explains the incredible array of weaponry that has evolved in the natural world and then applies that to the weapons developed by humans. The first part of the endeavor, the description of evolved weapons is enlightening, entertaining and certainly worth reading. His attempt to make the bridge between this and the human use of weapons is not so successful and plays too large a part in a relatively short book. This book has some good color photographs but is even more enhanced by illustrations by David Tuss.
Emlen is an expert on dung beetles and you come away with a new respect for this very diverse group of animals. However, his review of the evolution of weapons, defensive and aggressive, covers a very wide range of animals from tiny pseudoscorpions, which fight for their harems while hitching a ride on the backs of other insects, to enormous bull elephants, where the limited availability of fertile females raises the reproductive stakes.
Developing armor or weapons is expensive to the organism and therefore most species tend to be fairly balanced as they try to eat, avoid being eaten and reproduce. However, at certain times for certain species, there is an ''arms race" usually driven by sexual selection and Emlen identifies three key components:
1. Competition: Limited availability of fertile partners. It is almost always males who fight and beginning with a rare exception, the jacana, a bird, he offers a clear explanation why
2. Economic defensibility: What kind of resources are available and how to easy to defend
3. Duels: more extreme weapons will develop if the competition is one on one, rather than a melee.
These weapons come at a high price. The prize for largest weapon relative to body size goes to the fiddler crab, whose huge single claw can account for 50% of its bodyweight. In an extensive study of fallow deer, a species with one of the most extreme range of antler size, it was found that 90 % never mated and that they lost more than a quarter of their body weight during the rut. Other studies have shown that animals deplete calcium and phosphorus from existing bones to build antlers, making their bones very brittle at a time when violent conflict is most common. Emlen does an excellent job of explaining why these extremes develop and how sometimes they pass a tipping point.
It is when the author decides to compare natural weapons with humans, particularly when discussing arms races that he really steps out of his scientific expertise. Of course, humans are part of nature and are subject to the same environmental pressure as other animals. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that our weaponry is affected by the same trades-off that limit natural weapons. However, to talk of human weapons "evolving" is using the term in its vernacular, not scientific, sense. Most human weapons, from spears to nuclear weapons, were consciously designed and developed by humans and not the subject of Darwinian evolutionary selection and to confuse the two is unwise in my opinion. Further, his final chapter, "Mass Destruction", is rather naïve in its analysis of current threats. Having argued that the presence of nuclear weapons prevented major conflicts, he now believes that "cheaters" such as terrorists, not playing by the rules, could launch nuclear or biological attacks. While it is certainly true that there is now a greater risk of limited attacks like this, it is hard to see that it will be the cataclysm that he fears.
Except for some limited comparisons, the bridge he tries to build between weapons and warfare in non-humans and humans is unconvincing and adds little to our understanding of human warfare and rather detracts from the otherwise excellent book.

Beautiful integration of biology and history for the whole family!
By Al
I initially bought it for my dad as a Christmas gift, but I picked up a copy for myself as well. As we began reading the book together, we found that it was easy to read and very, very interesting. With his layperson-friendly writing style, Emlen discusses major biological characteristics (animal weapons) and parallels them to human history. Anybody with a desire to learn could pick up this book and get something out of it, and so, I would recommend any and everybody with a slight interest in biology or history to read this book.

Gorgeous Illustrations and a First Rate Story!
By Scott Wiser
The illustrations are gorgeous. I would expect nothing less from a Pixar artist who has worked on films such as Brave and Up. And when paired with a charming story, this book has gain a special place in our collection.

My wife read it first. I could hear her in the other room oohing and giggling. I then read it with the children, with whom we have read countless books, and there are few books that have made this kind of impression. We were all delighted by the end and concluded it was among the best we've ever read.

We highly recommend this book for parents, children, and collectors of all ages.

I love how well written this book is and that the illustrations match the words on the page beautifully. What a wonderful book! Cute story with a good lesson
By BrittyMama
This is a story about little Gale, the cloud, who preferred daydreaming and watching the land below to practicing her cloud shapes. She admired her friends who were all able to change into different types of clouds- from cumulus to cumulonimbus- but she was unable to do it quite like they did. Nervous that she will fail her final exam at Formation School she gives it her all. Little did she know she was destined for something even better.

This is a great story for children who like to think outside the box. The lesson is about focusing on your own strengths- even when that means not conforming to what is "expected" of you. Especially good for daydreamers who gaze into the sky and see shapes among the clouds!

John Ford is a monumental figure in Hollywood and world cinema. Throughout his long and varied career spanning the silent and sound era, he produced nearly 150 films of which Iron Horse (1924), Stagecoach (1939), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), How Green Was My Valley (1941), The Searchers (1956) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) are classics of cinema. Ford was also an influential figure in developing, and extending Hollywood's traditions. Stylistically Ford was instrumental in developing new camera techniques, atmospheric lighting and diverse narrative devices. Thematically, long before it became conventional wisdom, Ford was exploring issues that concern us today, such as gender, race, the treatment of ethnic minorities and social outcasts, the nature of history and the relationship of myth and reality. For all these reasons, John Ford the man and his films reward thought and study, both for the general reader and the academic student. Ford's pictures express the world in which they were made, and have contributed to making what Hollywood is today. This book illustrates the excitement, importance, influence, creativity, deviousness and complexity of the man and his films.
