About the Author
Susan Stempleski is the World Link series editor, teacher trainer, and noted author of several texts on teaching with film and video. She currently teaches at the Hunter College Intensive English Language Institute of the City University of New York and Columbia University Teacher's College, New York City.

James R. Morgan received his MA degree in TESOL from Columbia University Teachers College. He worked as a teacher training fellow in northern Japan and then served as coordinator of the Mombusho English Fellows (MEF) Program for two years. In addition, he taught English at the JAL-BBC Institute and edited in-house materials for Simul Academy in Tokyo. Subsequently, he worked as Senior Development Editor for Cambridge University Press in New York City. Since 1998, he has been a freelance author and editor on a variety of print and video projects for major ELT publishers. He is a co-author of the World Link and World Pass series for National Geographic Learning.

Nancy Douglas has been in the English language teaching field since 1991. She has worked as an instructor and materials developer in Korea and the United States. She has co-authored several series for National Geographic Learning, including World Link and Reading Explorer, and has edited print and Web-based materials for students as well as professional development courses for teachers.

Forerunner of 1960's Black Power Movement

Carlos Cooks was much more than a mid 20th Century Khalid Muhummad. He continued the Black Nationalist legacy left by Marcus Garvey. He wasn't afraid to point out the self-hating tendencies of the Black Middle Class (or caste as he calls them). He also is unafraid to challenge the prevailing popular thought on integration (American Tradition Vetoes Integration). He also laid the foundation for the Black power movement by influencing Malcolm X among many others. This is book that should be read for those who want to understand the roots of Black Nationalism.

Black Nationalism at it's strongest and wildest

Carlos Cooks was something of the mid-20th century version of Khallid Muhammad. Think Minister Louis Farrakhan can get outrageous? You ain't heard nothing yet! Carlos Cooks (a Harlem Street Speaker of the 40s thru 60s) used a lot of wild humor and shock theater to get his message across. His speech on Adam and Eve and it's relationship to Black people must be read to be believed! It seems that there were very few leaders that he really liked. Nkrumah, Haile Selassie, Fidel Castro, and many others take their lumps here along with any Black person who diverts from his dogmatic view of Blackness. Recommended for the most hardcore of militants and Black history fans only. This ain't Martin Luther king by a longshot here, so be warned!

About the Author
Born in 1916 in New York City, Harold Robbins was a millionaire by the time he was twenty. He lost his fortune by speculating on the price of sugar before the outbreak of World War II. Later, his fabulously successful career as a novelist, with many of his books turned into movies, would once again make him incredibly wealthy. For many years, Robbins enjoyed the high life among the rich and famous; he owned a huge yacht and had houses on the French Riviera and in Beverly Hills. His novels often mirrored his own experiences and were often people with the characters he had met. He died at the age of eighty-one, survived by his wife, Jann, and his two daughters, Caryn and Andreana.

Never Read This!

Set in New York City in the early 1950's, "Never Leave Me" is about a man on the make, Brad Rowan, owner of a small, independent advertising firm. Brad is given the opportunity to go to work for a major steel company as their public relations executive at a tremendous increase in salary and perks. However, he finds the aggressive tactics and ethics of the CEO, Matt Brady, questionable, so he turns down the offer. This refusal is ironic, since Brad himself has exhibited many self-centered, unethical traits also. The book flits from scene to scene, with little character or plot development and little attention paid to detail. I was constantly wondering whether a day or month had passed between scenes. How did Brad manage to fall hopelessly in lust with Elaine Schuyler the moment he met her? Why does he instantly forget about his loving, devoted wife Marge? Why does Matt Brady set out to destroy Brad's business by forcing all his clients to cancel their contracts? Why does Brad's assistant Chris jump ship and go to work for Matt Brady? Although I know the setting was New York City in the 1950's, the references to women as dames and babes really wore on me. The steamy sex scenes were too graphic, and in some instances, physically impossible. This tale of "lust and greed" has no redeeming qualities other than its brevity (268 pages) and the fact that Brad eventually returns to his happy family.

I first read this book when i was a teenager 45 years ago ,,, and re-reading it 45 years later I still loved his writing and style ... please bring back all his old "classics" they are masterpieces of an era and his style is very much copied all this time later and is rarely surpassed ... great book and a great writer and story-teller ...

Lust, sex, betrayal and greed....

This was my first Harold Robbins novel. The story line was very interesting and really pulls you rapidly along. This is a reprint from the 1954 novel, with all the then censored scenes returned to the story, as the author originally intended to present the story. You will see why many of these were deleted from the novel in 1954! This is a wild ride of a story, filled with lust,sex,trust, betrayal and greed in many forms, and the attempt to see which of these drives people the strongest. One man's lust leads to a major collision with his family on one end and a business enemy on the other. A death is the only way out, yet no one sees this coming. This combination of ingredients is apparently classic "sexy" writing by Harold Robbins.
