About the Author
Charles Fadel is a global education thought leader and expert, futurist and inventor; founder and chairman of the Center for Curriculum Redesign; visiting scholar at Harvard Graduate School of Education; chair of the education committee at BIAC/OECD; co-author of best-selling book 21st Century Skills; founder and president of the Fondation Helvetica Educatio (Geneva, Switzerland); senior fellow, human capital at The Conference Board; senior fellow at P21.org. He has worked with education systems and institutions in more than thirty countries. He was formerly Global Education Lead at Cisco Systems, and holds a BSEE, an MBA, and five patents.�Maya Bialik is a writer, editor, and research synthesizer at CCR, who is passionate about appropriate interpretation and the application of science at the personal and the policy levels. She is also co-founder and associate director of The People's Science. She leads workshops on science communication, improvisation, and interdisciplinarity. How to Structure a Complex Debate

Here’s a basic, yet essential, question: “knowing what we know about how children learn and what is necessary for individuals and societies to succeed and thrive, what should students be learning?”
However basic, this question poses real challenges. So many people have proposed so many ideas that the simple volume of answers might defeat even a determined investigator.
Fadel, Bialik, and Trilling offer some answers—but more important, they offer a conceptual structure that organizes everyone else’s answers. By sorting vast amounts of information into four well-defined categories – knowledge, skills, character, and meta-learning – they tame complicated debates so that we can talk with each other clearly and effectively on this topic.
I don’t agree with everything the authors propose; I think the book understates the difficulties of transfer, for instance. But the core accomplishment of _Four Dimensional Education_, the conceptual structure that holds curricular ideas and possibilities together, should be very helpful in any productive debate about education.

Refreshingly thoughtful and inclusive

Four Dimensional Education thoughtfully paints a picture of educational change in a way that feels refreshingly comprehensive and well synthesized. In particular I appreciated the perspective that a topic like this is open to change, and the ability to follow updates to the book over time is an interesting idea. The challenges of educational reform often lack either big ideas to be impactful for the decomposition of what needs to change in smaller steps. What I love most is how this book presents both of these elements in a way that fosters discussion instead of imposing a system on top of what we already have.

"Making high level ideas accessible to all"

This book has beautifully synthesized research across several areas to bring us a comprehensive picture of where education should be headed today and for the generations to come. Many efforts are missing the mark.
Fadel, Bialik, and Trilling do an excellent job of making high level ideas accessible to all. This is a must- read for parents, teachers, school leadership, researchers, and especially policymakers.
I particularly appreciated the global perspectives in this book and the recognition of the importance that must be placed on cultural relevance in teaching and learning.
As a recent graduate of one of the top education programs in the U.S., I would want to see this become a required readings for all our education and policy programs.
