This book took me back to a simpler time in America when I was growing up and learned to sew like most American girls, but these lessons skipped a generation and now very few know how to create their own garments and accessories for personal wear or for their homes. But this is not a lost art in most other countries. This book is a terrific guide for anyone who wishes to learn or to teach their children how to sew and have the rewards of creating and the pride of finishing something themselves. The projects in the book are pictured with very simple to understand and complete instructions and many patterns are included, which can be adapted to all sizes and to create many items. This book gives good know-how and experience for anyone from first stitches to creating personalized projects for very nice and practical gifts. The book would be an excellent home-school text also. I love it!

Love It!

I LOVE this book! She is wonderful at explaining sewing terms and processes. The projects range from Beginner-Easy Peasy (1 star) to Improvers-More Tricky (4 stars) from a cushion cover to a customized dress. These are all projects that I would enjoy making, which is not always the case with sewing books like this. The beginners section even has an easy quilt and a mini-bow belt! So happy with this purchase, I would highly recommend it!

Instructions are really easy to understand

At first I was disappointed with this cause it was aimed at beginners, but then I had to put a zipper in a dress, something I should have learned years ago, but realized I've been avoiding zippers with a passion because the ones I tried so long ago didn't go well. I turned to the zipper section and followed every step religiously, even though some of them seemed like they were overkill (that's how I screw up most of the time, taking short cuts), and do you know? I put in the perfect zipper. It looks amazing. I then thought I should send Lauren a thank you note. Ha ha. I love the "Have it your way" dress and now that I've got past the "I sew too well to use this book" thing, I appreciate the amazingly clear instructions. I am a self taught sewer, and didn't realize that I was kinda lacking in some of the basics (like zippers), but now I have no fear. I think if you are really experienced, you won't find much here. But then, it is named LEARN TO SEW with Lauren, isn't it? I loved her on the Great British Sewing Bee, it's why I bought the book! And when I read the text, I hear it in her voice. When I can find the frame, I am going to try the snap frame purse.

About the Author
In 2006 Christ “rhymes with wrist” John Otto was called by God to begin writing, leading worship, and hanging out in a local coffee shop. His adventure, and the people who joined him, eventually took the name Belonging House. Today after lots of coffee, five books, and thousands of emails, Belonging House has become an international "house" for creative culture shapers. Christ Otto holds degrees from Houghton College and Asbury Theological Seminary. Since 1986 he has worked in a variety of media as a freelance artist including decoupage, faux finishing, mural work, sign painting, commercial and retail design, and catering and pastry. He is a classically trained tenor and vocal coach. Through it all he has learned to be a son, and bring others into a relationship with God.

Finally! Someone spiritual who knows how to transform everyday environments

Let me say that I read this book twice -- once to see what it said, and once to take notes. It is that good.

It was a little hard to get through the beginning of the book but once Mr. Otto hit his stride in writing, the book flowed well. Why the five stars then? Because there is a lot of good material packed in here. I had to think through several things that were stated. Also I love it when an author can share material from a new perspective. Kudos on both counts.

Mr Otto is an artist who is deeply connected to the church culture so this book is slanted toward fellow artists and creative types. I think the things that are revealed here can also apply to entrepreneurs and business types. For instance, the book states that "Bezalel was called out, filled with the Holy Spirit, and then translated that inner experience into multisensory space others could experience." That statement could easily be said about many entrepreneurs. In fact, as Mr. Otto states, craftmanship -- a word used to describe one of the qualities that Bezalel possessed -- is a word which relates to keeping a business. In other words "business sense." It refers to a gift of oversight and leadership.

"Bezalel was empowered by the Holy Spirit to be like a Renaissance Master Craftsman running a studio." Anyone running a modern enterprise will recognize how similar that is to their work environment.

There are many details in this book about the importance of this Bible character and the details of his name and what he did to create an atmosphere for people to come into an experience of God. His name means "image of God' and Mr. Otto comes to an intriguing conclusion about who Bezalel really was. Buy the book if you want to know. It is NOT something you would have thought of on your own.

Concise, readable, and informative

I wish I had had this book when I started writing.
Now that I copy edit, I've made our editor-in-chief buy it for all of the writers.
In a completely readable way, it demonstrates how to write clean, effective copy.
If you're vaguely dissastisfied with your writing, or if have any desire to write for publication, then get this book. It will improve your writing at least 100 per cent.

How to avoid an attack of The Elongated Yellow Fruit

"The Associated Press Guide to News Writing" makes more points in 136 pages than do most writing books four times the size. One would expect no less from a master news editor like Rene Chappon. The formula Cappon follows is to write a very brief explanation of a problem; an example of the problem; a sentence dissecting the example; a rewriting of the problem sentence; and a summary of the topic. The result is almost always memorable. Consider this typical section on The Elegant Variation (capitalized words below are italicized in the original):

Writers who believe that the repetition of plain words within shouting distance of each other is crude take off on synonym safaris.... It's all the more grotesque as there are few true synonyms and the author may introduce misfits:
"The mayor's task force was asked to meet with the owners of the STRUCTURES, discuss whether they wanted their BUILDINGS preserved, and recommend ways to adapt older EDIFICES to new use."
STRUCTURES could be anything and EDIFICES is too grandiose; the story concerns commercial and apartment buildings. If the author didn't want to repeat BUILDINGS, a pronoun was the way out:
"...to meet with the owners of the buildings, discuss whether they wanted THEM preserved, and recommend ways to adapt the older ones to new uses."
The same craving for daintiness will convert elephants to PACHYDERMS, dogs to CANINES, cats to FELINES, tigers to STRIPED PREDATORS and cars to VEHICLES. Petroleum becomes BLACK GOLD, snow becomes WHITE POWDER (a justly forgotten poet once called it "God's dandruff"), a banana turns into THE ELONGATED YELLOW FRUIT.

The benefit of this style is that Cappon's admonitions pop up unasked whenever we commit one of the sins he identifies. I find that "elongated yellow fruit" frequently superimposes itself on my more tortured prose.

Not just for Journalists

This book is a must reference for journalists. It is small enough to be read and re-read many times. Every journalist should be forced to read this book, and be quizzed on it, every six months. It would save the rest of us from having to read the awful writing in the manistream press. Even a non-journalist would enjoy this book. It will give you some insight into how news stories are written. Also, if you catch a journalist breaking these simple "how to" rules, you can move on to another more well written story.
Personally, I would rather read a well written story about a topic in which I have no interest, than a poorly written story about something for which I am passionate.

About the Author
Blandine Calais-Germain's lifelong involvement with dance, both as performer and teacher, eventually led to an interest in other physical disciplines, and then to more formal study of the complex and integrated movements of the body.

From 1977 to 1980 the author studied physiotherapy at the French School of Orthopedics and Massage in Paris. In physiotherapy, body movements are analyzed both in terms of their neurophysiological and mechanical aspects, which allows for a better understanding of the actual mechanisms of movement.

From her work with dance and physiotherapy, the author developed an innovative method for teaching the physical structures of anatomy in relation to movement. This method, the subject of her companion volumes Anatomy of Movement and Anatomy of Movement: Exercises, has been enthusiastically received in workshops that she presented for many years in France. Her two books have been translated and published throughout the world in many languages.

Great for students, yogis, and teachers!

Fantastic book and required reading for any serious yoga practitioner or teacher. I'm sure most customers are probably in medical school that need this, but regardless of why you need this book, know that it is brand new, has sharp, detailed pictures and explanations, and is at the top of the list for anyone desiring to learn more about how the human body moves, what parts of the anatomy are utilized, and a broad overview of anatomy in general. For beginner and intermediate levels.

Excellent book for beginning and intermediate students

_Anatomy of Movement_ by Blandine Calais-Germain is an excellent book for someone who is new to kenesiology, and also for the beginning and intermediate athlete.

As its title suggests, _Anatomy of Movement_ focuses on the bones, muscles, ligaments & tendons we use when we move. Each major section of the body, such back, arms, legs, etc., gets its own section in the book.

The anatomical drawings are very well done. The book has enough text to explain the drawings, but not so much as to overwhelm the reader. There are drawings showing the directions each muscle pulls in during different types of movements. Those drawings are VERY helpful to understanding the kinesiology of the body.

There was also an extensive section in the beginning on anatomical terms, such as dorsal, dorsiflexion, lateral, anterior, posterior, etc. The sections on the spine, pelvis, & knees were exceptionally well done.

I am not a bodyworker, masseuse, or dancer; but as an engineer who sits in an office chair all day and does martial arts and occasionally yoga to relax, I have developed a keen interest in kenesiology and anatomical studies. _Anatomy of Movement_ didn't specifically tell me the mechanics of any single karate kata** or yoga asana, and it didn't specifically explain why bad posture in a chair leads to a sore back when I walk around -- but it did give me a sound base of knowledge when I started reading other books about specific movements and activities.

** - _Anatomy of Movement_ did help me understand how joint locks on the shoulder work.

Excellent Anatomy Guide for Athletes

The Anatomy of Movement is a well-written and organized book that is targeted to athletes, dancers and others who need to understand physical structures and their functional relationships to movement.

The book has very clear and detailed line drawings that are easy to understand and convert to three dimensional visualizations. They are also presented logically and without a lot of jargon or superfluous detail.

The book is organized by regions of the body and it does a good job of covering all areas. There is also a nice balance between diagrams and text.

I was a biology major as an undergraduate and a teaching fellow in Physiology. I also took comprehensive anatomy at the doctoral level and I found this to be just enough detail for people who are athletes. There are more comprehensive books out there, but if you want to learn the essentials painlessly, this is your book.

Another good book with a different focus is the Anatomy of Yoga by McCall. This includes yoga specific information and more text relating to movement. I regard the book I'm reviewing and the Anatomy of Yoga as complimentary.

Enlightening

This was the first hand report of the incredible Watergate break in. The story was confusing and I was not able to appreciate all of what they uncovered until much later. I saw the movie after reading the book and I was able to make more sense of the events after that.

Woodward and Bernstein are reporters and they stumble upon all these loose ends that they are able to successfully put together that eventually led to the bringing down a president and his corrupt associates.

It was an important book at the time and it had huge ramifications for everyone involved. It was also when people my age lost their political innocence. It is almost an unbelievable story.

When “Law and Order” Politicians Broke the Law

Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward were reporters for the ‘Washington Post’ who investigated the burglary of the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in Watergate. This 1974 book is their record of their work. It has 17 chapters, a ‘Cast of Characters’, an ‘Index’ but no ‘Contents’ in its 349 pages. On Saturday June 17, 1972 Bob Woodward got a phone call about a burglary and was asked to report to work. Carl Bernstein was already working on this story. It would appear in the Sunday edition. They began to trace the phone numbers in an address book by using a reverse directory. This newspaper report was followed by denials (Chapter 1). B&W began their background investigation into the people of the campaign committee. President Nixon denied any White House involvement in the burglary. The reporters learned more about the President’s men. Charles Colson was investigating “Kennedy and Chappaquiddick”.

The following chapters have many details on the investigation. A $25,000 cashier’s check for the Nixon campaign had been given to one of the Watergate burglars. [“Follow the money”?] The GAO’s audit determined more than $500,000 in campaign funds was mishandled. At first competitors, Bernstein and Woodward became friends. Moving contributions through a Mexican middleman allowed illegal contributions to be hidden from US investigators. The promise was to allow access if they had any problems with the EPA. People were afraid to talk to a reporter. Woodward had a source of information who could not be quoted but only confirm information obtained elsewhere (Chapter 4). A signal was devised for clandestine meetings at an underground parking garage in the early morning. Chapter 6 tells about the dirty tricks used against the Democrats. In October 1972 the ‘Washington Post’ released the story, over 110 subscribers printed it (Chapter 7). Muskie staffers told horror stories about sabotage incidents. Muskie suspected Nixon forces. [Was this harassment technique repeated in 2016 (p.150)?]

The White House denied the charges in the ‘Washington Post’ (Chapter 8). A denial by the White House caused problems for the ‘Washington Post’ (Chapter 9). After the election the investigation continued while the White House retaliated against the ‘Washington Post’ (Chapter 10). Liddy and McCord were found guilty and sentenced by Judge Sirica (Chapter 11). “Deep Throat” told Woodward that Colson and Mitchell were behind the Watergate operation, but the FBI couldn’t prove it (Chapter 12). Senator Sam Ervin would investigate Watergate and the 1972 presidential campaign. Chapter 13 tells of other tricks paid by the Committee to Re-Elect the President (phony telegrams, advertisements, and polls). L. Patrick Gray’s testimony vindicated the ‘Post’. McCord’s letter to the Judge told of perjury (Chapter 14).

At a dinner for journalists Attorney-General Kleindienst told them “the Watergate case is going to blow up” (p.285). The testimony of Magruder did just that. They learned “it didn’t start with Watergate” (Chapter 15). Haldeman approved everything, including the payoffs. John Dean talked, he refused to be a scapegoat. On April 30, 1973 Dean was fired and other resigned (Chapter 16). Unreported wiretaps led to dismissal of the charges against Daniel Ellsberg. The many investigations continued. Alexander Butterfield told about the taping of Nixon’s conversations (p.331). Nixon turned over the tapes, there were “gaps” in some conversations (Chapter 17). Was this tampering with evidence? “I am not a crook.” The Watergate prosecutors got guilty pleas. The Washington grand jury indicted seven men with a conspiracy to obstruct justice. The House Judiciary Committee considered an impeachment of the President. [This was Nixon’s seventh and last crisis.]

This book was adapted into a very successful movie that doesn’t go into the details found in this book. Once you’ve seen the movie read the book to learn what was left out. “For want of a nail ... a kingdom was lost.”

tasty options

I had a good variety of choices from this recipe book. I was just commonly acquainted with a view bread recipe and didn't even know which ones are Italian, so at least now I have knowledge not only how to bake but also knowledgeable of the breads' names.
I felt like really learning the basics and I'm enjoying every bit of it.

Sometimes I need to ficus my meditation, and I'm at a loss or too overwhelmed to narrow my thoughts. This deck is perfect, intuitive, and very encompassing of all life/spiritual aspects. It is a wonderful addition to my practice.
