just average reference book.

the author does not elaborate more about certain key points when he/she actually needs but talk too much when certain points are very intuitive and easy.

As a graduate student who is currently taking a course whose reference book is this one, I feel this is just an average book. Ones still need to go online to search for more elaboration and explanations from time to time.

A "must" book in any statistician's library

Anthony Davison is one of the rare applied statisticians with in-depth knowledge in statistical theory. He is an excellent researcher and lecturer. Anthony is the editor of Biometrika, one of the most prestigious methodological journals in statistics, for couple of years.
Take a look at the content of the book and you will see that it covers almost everything that a researcher requires to know about statistics. I would summarize this book as what is useful in statistics to learn, with focus on methodology. This book is difficult to use as a textbook, and much more suitable as a reference. I can even call it the bible of statistics. The fundamental ideas in statistics are clearly explained, and argued with excellent motivating examples. Exercises are even better and completes the lecture, but they are not trivial at all. Some of the exercises are simpler versions of a research problem, being borrowed from a research article. You need some knowledge of mathematics in the level of calculus-based probability and statistics to start reading this text. After finishing the book you will have a general picture of what is statistics.

Good book on statical models

The book is well worth reading, especially for those of us who are not well versed in matematics and matematical formalism. Some background in basic frequentist and/or Bayesian statistics is needed. Otherwise the book is easy to read and the real life application of the examples is easy to apply.

Forster whose five novels have become an esteemed part of the western cannon. "In America Forster has never established a great reputation." Trilling's comment implies the reason for his study of Forster. And indeed, it is this work that is credited with correcting that oversight. Lionel Trilling's evaluation meets the criteria for excellent criticism. It is impartial in that although overall it praises, it notes faults. "The quaint, the facetious and the chatty sink his literary criticism below its proper level . . . they even touch, though they never actually harm, the five novels . . . " The second criteria, the enlightenment of potential readers as to an author's intentions and techniques, is likewise amply met. All of Forster's novels are discussed. Many illuminating insights are provided. Forster's short stories are summarily treated. Trilling evidently did not consider short fiction Forster's forte. Lastly, a critic should provide in praise as well as admonition comments that might assist authors to create better works. In this Trilling is at a disadvantage since Forster after the publication of PASSAGE TO INDIA in 1924 completely forsook novel writing. Too bad. Trilling is good medicine for an author. A caution: the book is aimed at an academic audience. Allusions are made to various other significant authors as in "Forster is not taken in by his Gino as Santayana is by his analogous Mario . . . " Georges Santayana a prominent American philosopher wrote only one novel THE LAST PURITAN in which Mario is a key character. A college degree is not necessarily needed to follow Trilling's discussion.

Critical Longevity

This study of E.M. Forster was written during WWII, but it's still one of the best critical books about him. Some might say that Trilling's introductory chapter is a trial run of the thesis of his later LIBERAL IMAGINATION, but I think what he writes actually applies to Forster and isn't just Trilling's King Charles' Head.

One caveat: Trilling apparently wasn't aware that Forster was homosexual when he wrote the book, which isn't surprising since few general readers or literary people, excepting Forster's friends and associates, knew. It doesn't seem to make any difference, which is a point worth pondering by homophobes.

I don't agree with Trilling that HOWARD'S END is Forster's best novel, but I also disagree with him about the readability of THE PRINCESS CASAMASSIMA and his ancestor worship of Freud, which has no bearing on my belief that he was the greatest American literary critic of his time (apologies to Edmund Wilson).

Picturebooks explained

More things happen in picture books than meets the eye. The placement on the page, use of whitespace, and picture colorings have more to do with what the child perceives than we realize. Stereotypes and fears can be learned through the pictures. Excellent book for educators wanting to know more about the power of imagery and how imagery influences what children learn about their world.

Many of the feudal Russian states minted coins of their own starting in the 14th century, using new and original designs and naming their own rulers. The coinage, almost unknown in the West, exhibits a fascinating diversity, with many hundreds of types in silver and bronze produced. These early coins include imitations of the Mongol (Golden Horde) dangs, coins combining Russian elements and Islamic elements and, finally, a huge range of purely Russian coins showing a surprising variety of designs including biblical themes and verses, mythological themes and animals, numerous violent scenes of fighting, stabbings, decapitations and other things one might expect from medieval coins. Other strange things found on these coins are designs showing Alexander of Macedon, scenes of homage, scenes of coin minting and ever-present Russian inscriptions naming the ruling Dukes. This catalogue includes descriptions and images of many hundreds of coins, from the inception of the native Russian coinage to the eventual unification of types under the Vasily Ivanovich of Moscow (1505-1533). Coins of the Russian states which were not conquered by Moscow (such as Lithuania and Red Russia) are also included this book. The relative rarity ranking for all the listed coins is also given, which should be of immense help to any collector of medieval coins. The information is based on the most modern numismatic research available, but is presented in a simple-to-use way, aiming to introduce this fascinating coinage to the wide circle of both collectors and researchers. This book is an English version of "Russian Coins 1353-1533" edition of 2013 which has now become a standard catalogue for Russian medieval coins collectors being actually a first publication of such scale since 19th century catalogues.

About the Author
Dr. Tom Amberry was a podiatrist for 40 years, publishing many articles about various aspects of his profession. On November 15, 1993, following his retirement, Dr. Amberry shot his way into The Guinness Book of Records by sinking 2,750 free throws in a row. Since then he has become internationally known as, in the words of one announcer, "the best free throw shooter ever to touch a basketball." Dr. Amberry travels constantly, teaches shooting clinics and makes frequent radio and TV appearances. He has been featured on NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, ESPN, Dateling, Day One, The Late Show with David Letterman, NBA Inside Stuff, and ABCs World News Tonight. On his college basketball team, Tom Amberry was twice the nation's high scorer. He was an All-American two years in a row, turning down a two-year, no-cut contract with the Lakers to pursue a career in medicine.

Addresses both the physical and mental aspects of shooting free throws

Simple, step by step instruction that anyone, even a non basketball player, can follow to improve their free throws. This step by step process not only teaches you how to position your body and throw the ball, it also includes how to filter out the noise that often gets in the way of making successful free throws consistently and under pressure. My son won a free throw contest using this method without practicing much. Getting players to practice this method as much as Dr. Amberry suggests is a bit of a challenge given that many players are more into the sensational aspect versus the work aspect of playing ball. For those who are open to using it again and again, they will be amazed at what a difference it can make.

The book is a super quick read but for those who are more visual he has a video as well. I bought both.

Great book but . . .

A friend loaned me this book to read to try and help my kids. I enjoyed the book and purchased it for my 3 kids to read(2 boys, 1 girl), all basketball players since 5 yrs old and all played/playing high school ball. But they wouldn't read the book even though their respective free throw percentages have not been good. Probably would be best for very young players or players first starting to play basketball. Or maybe kids who listen to their dads (LOL).

The steps outlined in this book are very simple. Anyone can follow the steps and improve their free throw shooting.

Would suggest that a high school freshmen basketball coach require his (her) team to read this book and if any player's free throw percentage dropped below 50% they would be required to follow the technique developed by Dr. Amberry.

Great story and excellent technical description of free throw shooting

Lovely story of setting the Guinness Book of Records for consecutive free throw shooting; a great technical description of shooting a foul shot and lots of mental lessons to take away for life in general. My only problem was that it was 80 pages of text. Hard to get my fourteen year old to buy-in. A couple of pictures of the author with some College or NBA stars would have earned it the fifth star.
