About the Author
A native of San Antonio, TX, Henry fell in love with nature as a child at summer camp and on family camping trips. Henry believes that all people need to be connected to nature and that all children deserve opportunities for imaginative, exploratory, nature-based play. He has worked at summer camps and as a 2nd grade teacher. He co-founded and directed Friendship Gardens, a non profit project that grows food for meals-on-wheels in Charlotte, NC before moving back to Texas to serve the Nature Discovery Center as Executive Director. He is a husband, father, educator, adventure play advocate, garden nerd, and composter.

How to Start a Worm Bin is well-written and accessible. With Henry Owen’s clear guidance, I set up a good bin in the best location and filled it with the proper mix of bedding. I was then able to quickly identify a reputable place to buy my first batch of red wigglers. Once my worms arrived, the book helped me detect the signs of over-feeding; how to maintain a balanced moisture level; and, offered specific and comprehensive tips for regular maintenance to ensure a healthy wormery. The appendices are organized for quick reference, including a FAQ section and trouble-shooting chart. My wormery is thriving! The section “Worm Composting for Kids” inspired me to invite my granddaughter to share in the experience and to gain her first scientific and ecological insights. An added bonus is the author's generosity in providing ongoing electronic links and information to those who buy the book.

I highly recommend this guide to those interested in a responsible and fascinating route to making a positive, environmental impact and achieving nutrient-rich compost to boot.

Owen's guide is well organized and clear, with each chapter addressing a specific component of running a good womery, addressing fully fears and concerns beginners unavoidably face, maintenance tips that assure a continued healthy bin, and even suggestions for inviting children into the worm composting experience!

I definitely recommend this book to anyone considering worm composting.

All you need to know to get started with worm composting.

There are quite a few guides to worm composting but most of them repeat essentially the same information with slight variations in the way they suggest building your bin or which one to purchase among the commercial ones. What sets this book apart and makes it the best of those I have looked at is that it discusses each aspect of worm composting in the most practical way without much in the way of dogma. Instead the author discusses real life experience, much of it his own, explaining the reasons for various choices and leaving you with a good number of options in each area so that you can take advantage of bedding options that are inexpensively and readily available for you or food options that are likewise practical for each reader. I had it on hand when I began worm composting and it gave me all the information I needed to feel rightfully confident in being successful. Highly recommended.

A Simple Idea with Profound Implications Nicely Done

After reading Glimmer, Warren Berger's 2009 book looking at designers and design thinking, I became a fan of sorts and pre-ordered A More Beautiful Question anticipating something good as a follow-up. I wasn't disappointed. Like Glimmer -- and perhaps design thinking -- Berger takes both a deep dive and a broad stroke over his subject matter. This is tough to do well, but Berger pulls it off.

There is something delightful about looking at something that seems so obvious and simple, but is far from simplistic, in detail. Berger goes through the vast swaths of research and evidence on question formation and innovation and blends it seamlessly with anecdotes, observations and questions...lots and lots of questions. To 'live the title' of the book, the text is organized around questions and, at least with the Kindle, the questions are hyperlinked to explanations at the back about their origin and relevance. This feature was wonderful and frustrating -- but largely due to technology. I read using a Nexus tablet, but my preferred reader is the original Kindle. On that latter device, the linking becomes a frustration in that it is sometimes hard to get back to your place. But that's a small point.

Berger's style of writing is engaging, balancing conciseness with informality, and using enough revisiting of ideas in different places in the text to thread ideas throughout the narrative, but not too much to feel repetitive. I loved this just as I loved Glimmer.

What a reader will take from this is that questions are important, that the best (and most consistent) innovators, leaders and scientists are typically great at asking questions and not just providing answers. Indeed, Berger makes the case that the question and answer are inextricably linked showing dozens of examples of how the habits of questioning lead to exciting outcomes. He also offers a challenge to anyone involved in education -- which, he'd argue is nearly everyone in this age of change and ongoing learning -- to examine how questions are encouraged and discouraged to shun curiosity. This has enormous implications and, as we see, gets replicated in our businesses and other organizations.

If this book does anything for you I hope it gets you to ask better questions and enjoy not always having answers. Taken to heart, the message of paying attention to the questions -- living the questions if you will -- is one that may have profound consequences on your life, work, and learning.

An Inspiring Look At Inquiry Leading To Innovation

I recently attended an excellent seminar for senior executives called "Authentic Leadership." The facilitator of my small group had some encouraging things to say about the way that I frame questions. He then added: "I think that you would enjoy reading 'A More Beautiful Question.'" At his urging, I ordered the book and found that he was correct in his prognostication. I found this book to be intriguing and inspiring.

Using some excellent cases to illustrate principles, author Warren Berger discusses "The Power of Inquiry To Spark Breakthrough Ideas." He quotes liberally from such icons of innovation as Joichi Ito of the MIT Media Lab, David Kelly of IDEO, and Clayton Christensen of Harvard Business School. My office is contained within a hub of innovation, the Cambridge Innovation Center ,on the campus of MIT, so I am always intrigued to learn new lessons about innovation and the things that may spark it.

One of the threads that weaves itself throughout this book is the fact that children are natural questioners. It is only as we grow older that we tend to squelch our innate propensity to ask questions in order to better understand ourselves and the world around us. In this book, Mr. Berger offers many examples of individuals and companies that he re-learned the art of asking great questions.

I was intrigued to learn that Edwin Land, the father of instant photography, was prompted to develop this technology when his young daughter innocently asked him why they had to wait to see a photograph that he had taken when they were on vacation as a family.

He makes specific suggestions, based on research done at the Right Question Institute, regarding how to frame appropriate questions at each stage of a process of exploration, discovery and innovation. One insight that stood out for me was the use of terminology that is useful in a group setting that disarms defensive posture on the part of those participating in the conversation. The form of the question that often provokes healthy discussion is to ask: "How might we . . . .?" He also describes the technique that has worked for many companies of replacing "brainstorming" with "question storming."

His final challenge which he poses in the final chapter of the book, is to ask how each individual might frame "a more beautiful question" that frames and sparks inquiry and endeavors to provide meaning and purpose for the rest of one's life. Inspiring!

Excellent Book About the Question Process

Don't think it really occurred to me that that there was a process to questions. That there is a progression from why to what if to how. That things don't work so well if you go straight to the how.

I have had it in my head that I am not supposed to ask why questions. That this supposedly gets you stuck in the past, on who is to blame, on explanations. But when you ask, "why am I doing this? " you are really looking for intention. So I have put back "why" into my toolbox after reading this book.

Another useful thing was the discussion about how business sees asking questions as a waste of time and a distraction from acting. I have not been a fan of the old "just do it" thing and this reinforced why I am uncomfortable with it. A quote from some other book - "action without strategy is stupid!"

So overall a very powerful and practical book. No academic ivory tower "let's just sit here and theorise and make our selves sound smart by asking lots of questions" type of stuff.

It was good.

Overall, it was a fun, quick read. My girlfriend and I follow the tumblr online, and were excited for the book to come out.
Personally, I didn't find the issue to be anywhere near as humorous as the mini comics posted online (which is hard to do), but as a short story I thought it was well done.
There was action, feels, and plot twists; which considering the size of the book, is pretty impressive.
A nice touch was that at the end of the graphic novel, it had compiled all the mini comics from tumblr. I had fun perusing those again :)

This issue is mostly an intro to the main characters, and a hint of a story ark. The actual story contained in this issue is nothing new, but the characters pull it off with style. And cuteness.

It was also denounced by the House Select Committee on Current Pornographic Materials in 1952 as an example of how the paperback industry was promoting "moral degeneracy". But in spite of such efforts - or perhaps, in part, because of them - the novel became a record-breaking best seller and inspired a whole new genre: lesbian pulp.

a misunderstood minor classic

To describe this book as "lesbian-themed pulp" does it a grave disservice. Perhaps that is how it was perceived in the US but that says a great deal about American attitudes in the immediate post-war period and nothing whatsoever about the book itself, which is very much of its time: a touching, bitter-sweet evocation of the life of French women in the London of the 1940s. Think Francoise Sagan if you want the style - light, sharp and cunning. And moving, actually very moving. It worries me how many people might be put off buying it because of the way it has been, and apparently still is being, published.

The Many Flavors of Love

I have the 1961 printing of this book with the very pulpy looking cover and the subtitle "The frank autobiography of a French girl soldier." That statement and some of the sensationalist marketing have doubtless led some readers astray. This isn't an autobiography. It's a novel that was most likely inspired by the author's experiences during WWII in a London barracks. The narrator is an objective reporter. She's not an actual character in the novel in the sense that you ever see her in action. All the other women confide their innermost hearts to her and she is sort of an omniscient being in her ability to go with them wherever they go and know whatever they know. Obviously, this is fiction. It may have been marketed as an autobiography early on to escape censorship because any novel that contained homosexual content in those days was considered pornography, regardless of how graphic (or not) it was. By calling it an autobiography, therefore true, it became more legitimized.

Yes, there are lesbians and some very mild sexual scenes involving them. Certainly there is nothing graphic or titillating in this book. In any female military setting anywhere in the world, you will find lesbians. To have left them out of this story would have been a huge and noticable omission. The story is about all the ways these women go about their romantic pursuits and sexual awakenings. Lesbians, bisexuals, virgins, tarts, gold diggers, etc., are all represented. The author/narrator herself doesn't participate in these actvities, but puts herself forth as a student of love, trying to determine if love is worth the effort or if such a thing as true and honest love even exists. By describing the affairs of her bunk mates, she attempts to find the answers.

The narrator, who is supposed to be a young and naive virgin, doesn't come across that way. She sounds much wiser than that. She's also very sympathetic to all the characters, including the lesbians, whom she considers sad, but legitimate and worthy of respect. One of the ways this book might be considered revolutionary is how the lesbians are described as just being what they are, natural and in many ways just like everyone else during a period of history when homosexuals were considered mentally ill or worse. The narrator portrays them as lonely and on the fringes of society, which they certainly were back then. But she doesn't back away from examining their type of love just like all the others.

This is not a story about lesbians. It's a story about a diverse group of French women and their romantic adventures and misadventures in the 1940s as they go from eager, optimistic girls to disillusioned women, cut off from their families and country. It starts out like a steamy potboiler, but it soon becomes an engrossing story set against the backdrop of war-torn London, and by the end is actually very moving.

It isn't great literature, but I enjoyed it.

Excellent book on interpersonal relationships

Although this has been billed as "lesbian pulp fiction," that is not a very good description of it. While some of the characters are lesbians, others are straight. The book is, rather, a novel about women and their various relationships--friendships as well as romantic relationships. Very insightful, timeless and free of platitudes. It paints a picture of human interactions and responses during a time of war and deprivation, and is written with compassion and thoughtfulness.

I highly recommend it.

William James of Harvard wrote, "The greatest revolution of my generation is the discovery that people, by changing their inner attitudes of mind, can change the outer aspects of their lives."
You and your mind are extraordinary. You have 100 billion brain cells, each connected by ganglia and neurons to as many as twenty thousand other cells. The total number of thoughts that you can think is therefore equal to one hundred billion to the twenty thousandth power.
According to brain expert Tony Buzan, this means that the number of ideas you can generate is equal to the number one followed by eight pages of zeroes, more potential ideas than the number of all the molecules in the known universe.

After interviewing more than five hundred of the wealthiest self-made multimillionaires in America, he found they all had certain qualities in common. One of these common denominators was that the wealthy people in his research had developed the habit of always seeking the valuable lesson in every setback or diffuclty. And they always found it.
Most of their fortunes had come about as the result of applying the lessons they had learned through failure and hardship to developing breakthrough products and services that eventually made themr ich. But without the temporary failures and the lessons they contained, they would still be working for wages.
Here is a simple way to transform your thinking to that of the most positive and successful people in our society. Think about the biggest problem that you have in your life today. Now imagine that this problem has been sent to you as a gift, to teach you something. Ask yourself, "What is the lesson or lessons that I can learn from this situation that can help me to be happier and more successful in the future?"
Perhaps your biggest problem today is not a problem at all. Perhaps it is an opportunity. As Henry Ford said, "Failure is merely an opportunity to more intelligently begin again."�

The Great Discovery

Perhaps the greatest discovery in human history is that "you become what you think about—most of the time." Your beliefs, either positive or negative, helpful or hurtful, largely determine everything you do and how you do it.
