Nels Bailkey is a retired professor from Tulane University.

Richard Lim, Professor of History at Smith College, teaches the history of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. His research focuses on the cultural and religious history of late antiquity, and he is currently finishing a book project on the reception of public spectacles during the Later Roman Empire.

Great for Intro to Ancient Hist

I am only writing this as a response to the above review. I hope no one takes the gender remark seriously. The book is simply a collection of primary source readings from Ancient History (Greek and Roman readings comprising the bulk of this). How a book of primary sources can remain gender neutral is beyond me. The book is intended to serve as an introduction to the vast (and not so vast if you're actually doing research in ancient history) amounts of sources. Hence why it only has excerpts from the various readings. The idea is that if a person enjoys reading an excerpt from say Plutarch's Lives, then they will go out and buy it, rather than buying all the possible readings in ancient history individually. One subtle note about the book is that Bailkey's comments preceding each reading often relate them to readings from different eras. This can be very useful in an introductory history class.

I very much like the way that different civilizations are represented as they developed simultaneously. This is a much more engaging approach to the study of history than the bland, textureless stuff being offered by many standard text books. Oh, and I'm a woman.

Really, it almost isn't necessary to say more than that. Bailkey provides insightful commentary and summaries for hundreds of primary-source documents - a delightful compendium of ancient knowledge and a joy to read.

VII--The Psychology of Scale Orders THE observer of market conditions soon comes to know that there are two general classes of minds whose operations are reflected in prices. These classes might be named the "impulsive" and the "phlegmatic." The "impulsive" operator says, for example, "Conditions, both fundamental and technical, warrant higher prices. Stocks are a purchase." Having formed this conclusion, he proceeds to buy. He does not try or expect to buy at the bottom. On the contrary he is perfectly willing to buy at the top so far, provided he sees prospects of a further advance. When he concludes that conditions have turned bearish, or that the advance in prices has overdiscounted previous conditions, he sells out. The "phlegmatic" type of investor, on the other hand, can hardly ever be persuaded to buy on an advance. He reasons, "Prices frequently move several points against conditions, or at least against what the conditions seem to me to be. The sensible thing for me to do is to take advantage of these contrary movements." Hence when he believes stocks should be bought he places an order to buy on a scale. His thought is: "It seems to me stocks should advance from these prices, but I am not a soothsayer, and prices have often declined three points when I felt just as bullish as I do now. So I will place orders to buy every half point down for three points. These speculators are a crazy lot and there is no knowing what passing breeze might strike them that would cause a temporary decline of a few points." Among large capitalists, and especially in the banking community, the "phlegmatic" type naturally predominates. Such men have neither the time nor the disposition to watch the ticker closely and they nearly always disclaim any...

Good advice for stock traders

This book was written in 1912, but surprisingly would have been a great guide book over the past 100 years. The principles could have made us a lot of money in the twentieth century and stopped a lot of the losses in 1929 and 2000.

Here is the top five principles of the book in summary:

1. Your main purpose must be to keep the mind clear and well balanced.Hence, do not act hastily on apparently sensational information;do not trade so heavily as to become anxious; and do not permit yourself to be influenced by your position in the market.

2. Act on your own own judgement, or else act absolutely and entirely on the judgement of another,regardless of your own opinion."To many cooks spoil the broth."

3. When in doubt,keep out of the market. Delays cost less than losses.

4. Endeavor to catch the trend of sentiment.Even if you should be temporarily against fundamental conditions,it is nevertheless unprofitable to oppose it.

5. The greatest fault of ninety-nine percent out of one hundred active traders is being bullish at high prices and bearish at low prices. Therefore, refuse to follow the market beyond what you consider a reasonable climax, no matterhow large the possible profits that you may appear to be losing by inaction.

A wonderful little book on trading

This was a treat. Written in the begining of the 19th century it is still dead on. Even after reading a score of trading books this one reads fresh. It's the kind of book that is short but brilliant and which you will find yourself rereading. Wonderful little apercues on market pyschology. Much of it, you already know if you're an old hand, but expressed in a way that brings it home to you. Very well written. A joy to read.

A Pithy Read for So Slender a Volume

I have the paperback version of this book. Though originally published in 1912, it reads as a contemporary volume. Why? Human DNA has not changed. Accordingly fear, greed, hope and despair will always be key elements in everything that we do--to include our being market participants.

There are so many quotable phrases in this book. Foundational to everything is this one from p. 28 of the paper back: "Probably no better general rule can be laid down than the brief one, 'Stick to common sense.' Maintain a balanced, receptive mind and avoid abstruse deductions."

While that phrase is foundational to the book, this book ought to be foundational to every investor/trader's resource library. And I promise this....when you get to the chapter entitled "They"--you will find it so extraordinarily reminiscent of our current conversations of the shadowy figures 'propping' up the futures or "quant machines go wild" that you will chuckle.

You will not be disappointed by this book.

Not a real book.

This book is 72 pages long. It looks and reads like it was written as a research paper, with the idea afterward to publish it and try to make some money. It is written at a high school level. If you enjoy reading, do not buy this book. Wait for the real biography coming out in March. I was fooled.

This is a poorly written book with only surface level coverage of Elon Musk's life. The book covers Elon Musk by describing sequential facts. The book does not come close to the quality that one would expect from a biography.

This book was a silly puff piece and definitely not what I was expecting when I saw that it was an Elon Musk biography. This was the stratospheric overview of Elon Musk's life. I think that it's possible to do better than this.

About the Author

After an early career as a professor of computer science, Steven Muchnick applied his knowledge of compilers as a vital member of the teams that developed two computer architectures, PA-RISC at Hewlett-Packard and SPARC at Sun Microsystems. Upon completion of the initial work on each architecture, he served as the leader of the advanced compiler design and implementation groups for these systems.

A Very Good Starting Point Into Compiler Theory from 1997

My employer owns the book. It is a constant on my shelf. The dragon book is great but there are concepts I did not understand in the classic dragon book until the Muchnick book spelt it out for me.
Also at the end of the book it covers real products and how they implement optimization techniques.

I bought this book to help with a compiler I'm writing for personal use. I've had introductory compiler courses, and I was looking for a text to expand my knowledge. I read this book from front to back and learned a lot. However, there were a lot of areas that didn't make sense on first reading. I figured they would become clearer after a re-read. They didn't. Each time I reach a point in my compiler development where I need additional explanation, I return to this book and find that what didn't make sense on a first read doesn't make much more sense the second time around. Or the third.

The problem with this book is that some parts are nearly indecipherable without prior knowledge. They are missing bits of detail that an advanced compiler designer might just "know", but without these details the rest is gibberish for the advanced beginner. For example, the section on iterated dominance frontiers didn't make sense after three readings. I finally pulled up the original paper on the subject, and all was clear. Muchnick had skipped a step in the algorithm.

Another example of missing detail is in the chapter on code generation. Muchnik uses the "=>" symbol without explaining its meaning. Without this detail, much of the section is meaningless. I pulled up a bunch of papers on the subject to try to find what I missed, and now it's clear.

Yet another example - Muchnick uses three kinds of intermediate language/representation (IR) - high-, medium-, and low-level IR. It's pretty obvious what's different between high- and medium-level IR, but his explanation of the difference between medium- and low-level IR is sorely lacking. More examples would have been helpful.

He uses his own programming language for describing the algorithms. This didn't bother me much after I understood the language. But his example code is a confusing mix of verbose and terse. His terse variable and function names make it difficult to grasp what the code is doing without already understanding the algorithm.

The good thing about this book is that it covers a lot of ground. It introduces most of the topics an advanced compiler designer needs to know. But to really grasp all the ideas in this book, you need access to a good computer science library. The bibliography is very good; you can learn a lot from reading the references. I signed up for the ACM Digital Library for just this purpose. If you're a student, you can get access to the ACM Digital Library for less than the price of this book - that's a real bargain.

My recommendation is to buy this book, and be prepared to do additional research to overcome its shortcomings.

The book has an unexpected subject: the currency war. More specifically, it is intended to be a preparation for that war. The book begins with an explanation of the reasons why the American dollar has lost its first position between the other currencies at the beginning of the third millennium. This decline is seen as a constant element in history, where great powers were deeply affected by their huge debts and finally collapsed under this burden. The book shows further on how the devaluation of the American dollar affects our entire life.
Another interesting point of the book is the way it explains the foreign exchange market and the interest of governments to devalue their currency in order to boost their exports and thus to help their economy. One of the solutions that could help us to survive in this war the author recommends is to buy gold, the age old universal currency. Worthy of attention is also the presentation of the career options that an individual has today, such as healthcare, energy, education, etc. Being versatile, says the author, is a key to success in a fluctuating economy.
The author also gives a few suggestions that could help us to survive in this currency war: 1. Create a personal fund by saving money 2. Keep some cash in your house 3. Eliminate debt 4. Invest in gold, silver and property 5. Or learn how to grow food.
All in all, the book is worth reading and invites us to reflection about our world.

Run, don't walk, away from the US dollar..

Extremely well written book on world economics.. Most Americans know only how our nation's economy works (actually, it doesn't work very well at all). This is an in depth explanation of the"big picture". A factual look at the other major (and many of the smaller) economic powers in the world. If Rickards' prediction comes true and the rest of the world finally realizes that the United States is bankrupt ($14 Trillion in debt) and there's nothing to back that debt except our promise to pay it off), the US dollar may well become worthless. That will, indeed, be the end of life as we know it.

Easy to understand and easy to build working wooden locks. I have the first book 'Working Wooden Locks" and have made all the locks in it. Sure would be nice if he would do another book with more/different locks. Be careful buying the second book. They are ONLY 2 Books. Fist Book: Working Wooden Locks, Second Book: MORE Working Wooden Locks. The cover picture was changed on the first book and has caused some confusion.

I Love these 2 Books and Highly Recommend them.

Fantastic book!

I bought the first book in this series & loved it. I wanted to purchase this book for a long time, but I was unwilling to pay the ridiculous "ransom" prices some of these used sellers want because the book is out of print. Well, I finally found it, new, on the publisher's website in PDF (eBook) format for $20.

Well written and accurate, this is the book for anyone who is serious about flying in this new age. I wholeheartedly recommend that everyone who flies a drone read this. Even if you don't go for a license the book gives you extremely valuable info about flying and drones.

I have just spent several days looking at FAA guidance and various web pages to get a handle on how to go about getting approval to fly unmanned aircraft legally. I came upon this after putting in considerable time, and find that it provides an excellent compilation of the important considerations and provides a lot of practical advice. It will be required reading for my consulting group.

This profound power is not unknown, although it is misunderstood in its entirety. It is the power to analyze, theorize, weigh, measure, and deduce, to arrive at definite and logical conclusions. Of such is the Power of the Word and the Divine Principle of Mathematics working through the Cyclic Law, which reveals the quality and unfoldment of the human mind through time.

Time represents the unfoldment of the evolutionary forces of nature working in the finite plane of existence through our calendar principle of seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years, and throughout the ages; it is based upon the movement of the earth around the sun. When man fully realizes that numbers are symbols of Divine Intelligence as well as being mathematical gradations, that they have quality as well as quantity, he will realize the relationship of season to time. A plant grows according to time and season, which are predetermined. Thus is God discernible through his own laws, governing the growth and unfoldment of all life upon the earth.

Perhaps, you as a businessman have been dreaming of the key that would reveal the nature and trends of our economic cycles. We are told: "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven," (Ecclesiastes 3:1), the secret being to find the nature and experiences relative to time, so that it might be revealed in a practical way.

It is only logical to assume that the reason and plan of being is contained within being itself, and it is man's duty to become the interpreter. There is a magic key to the growth and unfoldment of human mind, as well as to that of all existence, such as the nature of the ages. This magic key is the Cyclic Law that reveals the relationship of economic and natural conditions to the divine measuring stick, mathematics, as the contents of this book will reveal.

This book explains why one year may be fantastic and the next filled with problems and heartache; why I have a lot of energy and determination on one day and then a few days later I feel like a balloon that's been punctured! I guess cycles apply to everything else--wind, waves, sun, planets, migrations--why can't they apply to human mind? The writer has done a very thorough investigation into cycles applied to human mind and life, and his understanding is very helpful and encouraging--provides hope!

Understanding cycle influences...

What's revealed in this book is how laws of mathematics influences everything around us, our business, people's environment, and even different portions of a day have its own subtle influence. Awareness is key to working effectively with the cyclic laws of mathematics. Have you ever noticed how some buildings require the same kind of repairs... compared to other places? It's one example of how revealing numbers are in its influence.
