Online VS. Hardcopy version

After reading several of the chapter sections at the authors website, I needed a bit more understanding about how to install and configure Bind 9 onto our Windows box. I wanted to use Bind on old hardware running NT4. I fired off an email to the author and got several pointers that fixed the problems I was having. I realized the pointers he had given me were all covered in his book. After purchasing the book, I not only found out lots of stuff about what all the parameters are but also discovered how to manage bind over the LAN in a secure way. This book is a must have for anyone that wants to use Bind 9 for the first time. It has helped me several times already.

Don't buy this book!

I pretty much had to buy this book because my American Foreign Policy professor is in cahoots with the textbook racket industry. Let me tell you, the asking price for this book is utterly ridiculous. Why? Because first of all, it's just a book, and not a very large one at that. $150 for a total of about 540 pages is insane considering how low printing costs are these days. You may be thinking "well it must have a lot of insightful and interesting content to be worth the price". You'd be wrong. The approach this book takes to the history of AFP is just as stale and musky as the book itself. Yes, stale. Because the pages look like they were printed on cheap newsprint. Nowhere in the book will you find colored illustrations or highlights. The spine on the book that I received is much thicker on one side than the other--resulting in an awkward angle that won't even look good when collecting dust on my bookshelf. This book exists for one reason and one reason alone: to milk college students out of what little money they have.

I'd like to recommend the much cheaper alternative "Essentials of U.S. Foreign Policy Making" by Ralph G. Carter. It's only about $25, covers just about everything this book covers, and doesn't look like it was lobbed together in the back of a third-world sweatshop.

I consider this book an authority on the Cold War and the policy of 'Containment.' It gives a well rounded perspective and provides great insight into the policy decisions being made at a crucial time in American history. If only we had leaders like Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower among us today..

A Greenaway Primer

Woods' book is an exellent introduction to Greenaway's films. Woods' covers all of Greenaway's film's up to the Pillow Book. Primarily, as the title suggests, Woods is concerned with the coporeal qualities of Greenaway's cinema (and other things as well but being naked and playing dead is Woods' focus). The book can be a bit thick for those not interested in really getting into Greenaway's films. However, for those who are interested in very astute commentary on one the most interesting and challenging filmmakers working today, I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

How Nations Innovate compares how affluent capitalist economies differ in their patterns of technological innovation. Building on the 'varieties of capitalism' literature, this book goes beyond the traditional focus on 'radical versus incremental innovation' in existing scholarship, and takes the comparison of capitalism to an entirely new set of questions around technological innovation. For example, which type of capitalism engages in job-threatening innovation? Whose innovation widens income inequality? Whose innovation raises productivity? Which type of capitalism has more effective financial markets for innovation? Whose innovators emphasize 'control' rather than 'flexibility' during innovation?

By addressing these questions, the author demonstrates that the way nations innovate often has deep, and sometimes counter-intuitive, implications for how they compare in many areas of socio-economic performance. For example, although venture capital is most active in Anglo-Saxon economies, it seems that venture-capital performance in stimulating innovation is also poorest in precisely these countries. On the issue of employment, the author argues that, whilst technological innovation in Anglo-Saxon economies creates jobs, innovation in European economies destroys jobs. Nations also differ in the nature of income inequality driven by innovation. While innovation pushes top earners further ahead of median earners in Anglo-Saxon economies, it drags bottom earners further behind the median in European economies. Finally, varieties of capitalism also differ in their ability to cope with the volatilities of innovation. While Anglo-Saxon economies face a trade-off between low volatility and high innovation output, these two goals seem jointly achievable in European economies.

About the Author

Jingjing Huo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science, University of Waterloo. He obtained his PhD in Political Science from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. His research focuses on the political economy of advanced industrialized countries, especially technological innovation and labor market policies. He has published a book with Cambridge University Press (2009) on labor market policies in advanced industrialized countries, as well as various articles on technological innovation and social policies, in journals such as Comparative Political Studies, Socio-Economic Review, and Journal of European Social Policy.
