Poetry. Jewish Studies. In MARKED, Stephen Herz's poems of the Holocaust, we see through a prism of linked poems the unfolding horror, terror, and despair of this dehumanizing bloody time of cruelty, evil, and death. Here are poems infused with the Third Reich's virulent anti-Semitic slogans, proclamations, and hate-filled speeches calling for the death of the enemy—the Jews. Here is the Yellow Star, marking all Jews for the round-ups, the ghettos, the mass-shootings, and the death trains. From the burning of the books to the burning of the bodies, here is history distilled. One can hear the voices of the bystanders wishing the Jews "good riddance." Voices of Einsatzgruppen, the mobile killing squads. Voices from the Sonderkommandos in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Voices crying out for help from an indifferent America, an indifferent world. And, here are the shots shots shots echoing through the poems, echoing through time. Today, some seventy years after the Holocaust, we still can't understand. But, the author hopes this collection of Holocaust poems will help us to remember, help us to keep the Holocaust alive, to keep it from falling into mythology.

These poems are a guide and a testimony to the Holocaust
By Gail Ostrow
As a teacher of the Holocaust and Holocaust literature, I am so excited to make these poems available to my students. Aharon Appelfeld wrote "art describes the indescribable." And here, Herz describes it all. He starts at the very beginning and takes us to the very end, when all that is left is remembrance. The poems in "Marked" are both the history and the spirit's experience of the Holocaust. They are timeless and, like Herz's earlier book "Whatever You Can Carry," call out to us confront what we humans do to each other.

Poems of the Holocaust by Stephen Herz is probably one of the best poetic introductions to the Holocaust
By John Guzlowski
Marked: Poems of the Holocaust by Stephen Herz is probably one of the best poetic introductions to the Holocaust. In language that is clear and resonant, Herz tells us what we need to know in images and lines that we will not soon forget.
The power of his writing can be seen in this excerpt from the poem "Shot."
shot in the synagogue . . .
shot in the roundups trying to escape

shot in their cribs
shot in the air, the baby thrown over its

Smart and Sensitive Poetry on a Nearly Impossible Subject Matter
By Okla Elliott
In the tradition of Reznikoff's book-length poem, Holocaust, Herz's collection makes use of actual documents (diary entries of victims, perpetrators, and bystanders alike, as well as historical documents). Herz also writes more purely imagined poems dealing with the weighty subject matter of genocide. This book should be used in every Holocaust literature course.
