From Publishers Weekly
Readers familiar with Our Bodies, Ourselves, first published in 1970, will find the same comprehensive, balanced and empowering approach in this volume. The authors consider menopause within the totality of women's health and as a natural process, not a medical problem. They detail typical menopausal symptoms, mainstream and alternative treatments, and risk factors for such conditions as osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer and diabetes as women age. They explain the biology of menopause; provide up-to-date perspectives on hormone replacement therapy (HRT); discuss sudden and early menopause due to surgery, medical treatments or genetic risk factors; and offer personal reflections by individual women. The sections on how to evaluate research findings; make wise health-care decisions; understand the social, cultural, economic and political frameworks in which women's health care is viewed and formulated; and nurture the self—mind, body and spirit—during years of change on all levels will prove most useful. As a general reference on menopause, this volume will be embraced by a wide female audience. (Oct.)

"So much has been learned about menopause in the last twenty-five years -- what a challenge it had to be to treat the subject in a comprehensive, comprehensible manner, which this book admirably does....A worthy companion to the classic pathfinder book by the same organization."
-- Isaac Schiff, M. D., chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology Service at Massachusetts General Hospital
"Who's afraid of menopause? Not the authors of this book, who offer practical health information and the wisdom of experience to help other women through this life transition."
-- Kathleen Turner, actress
"Our Bodies Ourselves has done it again!...Our beloved guides to our own bodies...lead us through menopause with this detailed, inclusive, and woman-centered book -- a must-read for every woman in her middle years."
-- Helen Zia, author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People and former executive editor of Ms. Magazine

new version is needed

Great reading again for a new generation of menopausal women. I look forward to an updated version listing the many beneficial effects estrogen has, now that we know how to live longer and we have equality laws, coed medicine (marijuana) and anti discrimination protectors in place.
"Hooray for estrogen replacement therapy and " it will say...we also have reason to believe bio identical cannabinoids can decrease cancer producing cells. So, great book, look forward to an updated version

More clinical than I expected
By CRC
First and foremost, if you are looking for a book to make you feel OK with the physical changes you will experience during menopause, this is not the book for you! it is a bit of a kill joy!! I found the first half to be written in a very factual and rather clinical fashion and was tempted not to keep going. There was also a lot of repetition. However, I found that the second half of the book was better. Not sure if that was because I got used to the author's style, or if in fact the content changed (likely the latter). Also, the provision of facts about physical and emotional changes were not accompanied by any concrete suggestions/recommendations for remediating problems. I bought the book looking for understanding of why changes were happening to my body (the actual physiological reasons) and what I might be able to do to overcome them. There was not much to help me with the "whys?" or with the "what to do". I can think of only two actionable suggestions for hot flashes - Black Cohash supplements and flaxseed. With all this said, I did like the inclusion of many personal statements from women about their experiences. These became more frequent as the book progressed and likely why I found the book of more interest as I went along .
