About the Author
William Somerset Maugham was an English author, playwright, and doctor best known for the semi-autobiographical novel Of Human Bondage. Orphaned at a young age, Maugham was raised, unhappily, by his uncle, who urged him into a medical career despite his talent and interest in writing. Maugham gave up his career in medicine after his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, sold out its initial printing in several weeks, and next ventured into playwriting with Lady Frederick, which was such a success that by the following year Maugham had four plays running simultaneously. Maugham worked for the British Secret Service during the First World War, travelling all over the world before making his home in the south of France after Second World War and using his experiences as inspiration for new stories. Before his death in 1965, Maugham published many more successful novels including The Letter and The Razor s Edge, both of which were adapted into feature films. Maugham has been remembered as one of the most influential and successful writers of his era, and is believed to have been the highest paid author of the 1930s.

Fast Reading

A fast read and a plot-driven novel. Essentially a doctor, Arthur Burdon, who thinks he knows everything, makes the initial mistake of engaging himself to Margaret Dauncey, a younger and young woman of whom he is sole support and guardian. To cure the problems inherent in such an arrangement, he insists that she live in Paris for two years before they marry. That ought to do it, he must think to himself, but he's wrong.
Through his friend, Dr. Porho�t, Arthur meets a meddler in the occult named Oliver Haddo, the magician of the title. All manner of problems ensue, including Haddo and Burden becoming arch enemies.
Among the attractions of this novel are Maugham's references to masterpieces of art--he uses the references in part to describe characters. I'm reading the novel on a Kindle Fire, which permits me, with a touch or two, to access an image of the referenced painting--and so appears, among others, both Haddo and Margaret.
I finished the last page asking myself why Maugham wrote this book. The only Maugham book I've read recently is The Hero, which includes focus on the trait the main character hates most in the woman he has engaged himself to marry: She is ignorant, but thinks she knows everything. I wonder if Maugham in The Magician, had the same idea in mind. It's the same idea that's at the center of the Stanley Kubrick movie, Eyes Wide Shut--a principal character who thinks he knows everything about everything, and learns better.
The Magician is not among Maugham's most widely read books; nevertheless it's a fine, fast-reading, diversion.

Troubling tale in Victorian times

I recently came across this book in a pile of old books and decided to read it. In the introduction the author states that he had read it again in the 60s because his publisher wanted to re-issue it. He said he wondered how on earth he had come up with all of the information about the black arts that he wrote about because he doesn't remember researching it. He thought his style was not at all how he wrote in later years.
In any case, I thought it was interesting to read of Paris and London before WWI. I knew trouble was coming as soon as the magician appeared. I was satisfied with the ending.
I have the Penguin 1967 paperback edition.

More Maugham, Please!

This was the first Maugham novel I have read, but certainly not the last. I came across this little gem when cruising for free Kindle books. This story rolls together some of my favorite things in novels: delicate post-Victorian European sensibilities, occultism, and eccentric characters. I really like Maugham’s writing style—plenty of description without overkill. He lets the plot move on at a steady rate.
Maugham weaves the horrifically impossible into a character he names Oliver Haddo. By his own admission, Maugham gained inspiration for the Haddo character from his brief encounters with Aleister Crowley, a man he found to be particularly disagreeable. Having read a good bit about Crowley beforehand, I was intrigued to see how a writer would fictionalize him.
In the edition I read, there was a brief foreword by the author in which he confesses he had nearly forgotten the novel altogether. I sure won’t! If you’re interested a good (free!) tale with some black arts and a sad love story worked in, I’d highly recommend this one.
